P T O Shaft reinstall procedure

Postby 69ranger » Mon Jan 24, 2022 10:13 pm

Hello everyone,

Just wondered if there is any special procedure for installing the PTO shaft back in a cub?

I fished around inside and tried to hold the shifter with one hand, and engage the shaft, and bearing assembly into the tractor.
Messed with it quite a while, and never really gained any ground.
Usually when I just cant get something apart or back together, its because i'm not doing something right.

I think I'm doing it right, but Its pretty impossible to see what is going on down in that dark hole. I guess you have to feel for it? Right?
I finally walked away tonight and will try again tomorrow.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated
Best Regards,
Brad

Remove the transmission fill plug and shine a light down the hole.

Perhaps this will shed some light on part of your problem. viewtopic.php?f=144&t=100568
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

I have found that if I remove the bolt holding the shifter lever bracket on top of the transmission, it will allow easier & more movement of the pin to engage the clutch. Once in place, just bolt it back down.

But as Don says, remove the transmission fill plug to see what you are doing.

A few choice words always help at these times, too!!

As mentioned above plus it helps to make a couple long pins to slide it in on. A couple long bolts, with the heads cut off or a couple pieces of all thread.

Re: P T O Shaft reinstall procedure... GOT IT!

Hey you all,

Thank you for the help, and suggestions!!

For some reason I woke up early and refreshed today. That does not happen very often. :D

So before work I went out and tried to install the PTO shaft. I had a small flash light that would go down through the fill hole, and light things up. Boy, that helped a lot.
Anyway it slid right in to place where is should be. I bet I did not work 5 minutes getting it in, and last night I struggled for an hour or more, and finally gave up. So that wraps up the PTO work.

Yesterday, on my lunch hour, I went to the local machine shop to find the spring retainer for the bearing, that was missing. He had an assortment of them, and it looks just like the book shows. Also restaked the bearing to the shaft, as it was not as tight as I wanted it to be.

Well the good news, is the PTO is not tight, and there is no movement in and out. This weekend I had rebuilt the worn shifter, by drilling it out, and welding a new piece of drill rod in place.
I'm not sure why some one ever put that PTO in with out the bearing retainer snap ring in place. I feel like I got really lucky on this, as the inside shaft splines were not worn or rounded off.

I think I am good, and that should pretty well wrap up the mechanical work, and since I have been painting parts along as I go, most of the paint is done.
When the weather warms up, I will probably take it out side and give everything a nice even coat of Sherwin Williams paint.
That will make everything have a nice heavy coat of paint.

Glad to hear it went together so easily. I never did wake up before work refreshed enough and wanting to do anything.

This was unusual for me, but It was bugging me, when I went to bed, that I could not get it back together.
I guess I am weird, but I woke up a couple times during the night thinking about it.

That little mini trouble light idea is brilliant. Pardon the pun.. I am going to make one, to have around just in case I have to do this again one of these days.

This thing is coming along really well, and its been a fun project for the winter.

Thanks again for the help..

When I decided that I needed one of the "world's smallest drop lights", I dug out an old auto wiring harness I had kicking around. I found a socket, probably for a side marker or maybe for a license plate light. I chopped it off, extended the wires, and put alligator clips on the other end. It has either a 168 or 194 bulb (whatever was in it already).

It looks about like this one:
https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/GRO841008

The lip on the socket is pretty helpful. It acts as a shield so the light isn't shining back up in my eye. I have found this thing to be very useful in many places even if they aren't as restricted as that filler hole. You can often bend the wires a bit to keep the light out of your face and on whatever you are working on. I may use it more than I use the full size drop lights.

It would be good for the "through the handhold clutch adjustment" task, too!
