PTO issue

Postby Vbay160 » Mon Aug 09, 2021 8:06 am

Hey guys, new member here and I am in the process of getting my late fathers cub up and running after it has sat for years.I have changed all the fluids an filters and have pretty much got it going but I am having a issue with the PTO slipping. I thought my problem was the shafts in the gear case but once I started tearing into it I found my issue is the shaft is wore out where it goes into the case where the drive pulley that runs the belly mower is located. The short drive shaft is worn here and it goes into a coupling that turns the pinion gears in the pulley housing. This coupling is also worn out and I can’t seem to find the part number or what this coupling is called. I will try to enclose some photos so you guys can see what I am talking about and identify the part I will need. Thanks for any help in advance

Wow! I can not believe your splines are gone on your pto shaft!

Makes me wonder what caused that!

I wonder if someone used a sloppy sickle mower pulley on that at one time, I just can not see the belt pulley attachment doing that!

Looks like you will need a new pto shaft! Or have that one welded up and resplined!

Yeah when I tore in to it I was expecting my issue to be where the coupling attaches to the front drive shaft. The silver coupling is the part number I am looking for. The teeth on the inside of it are worn smooth also so I guess it was just spinning on the PTO shaft and wore those splines out. I did think about just welding the coupling onto the PTO shaft since both of them are shot but figured I would try to fix it the correct way. Thanks for your input.

Thanks for the parts schematic. On there it looks like it is actually two parts #27 and #28. I thought it was only one part. I have it soaking in penetrating oil now to see if I can get them apart. Does the schematic have part numbers anywhere? Thanks again for your help.

yes you need a new PTO shaft, seen this before, the shaft on the right angle drive is probably costly , might just be easier to pick up a good used one

The part numbers are on the next page.

Reference number 27 is the woodruff key. Number 28 is the coupling with the internal splines.

Hi,
TM Tractor at the bottom of the page has a new PTO shaft, below is the listing, you can look at the pic.

http://www.tmtractor.com/new/pt/514fp.htm

Below is their page of PTO parts, I would replace the PTO clutch, at the front of the PTO shaft, if the splines have any wear.

The PTO shifter lever should have a round pin that runs in the slot in the PTO clutch, sometimes the pin wears flat on one side, then the PTO can slip out of engaged.
Remove the transmission filler plug, and look in through the hole with a light, and you can see if the pin is round or has worn flat.
The shifter shaft needs replacing if the pin is flat.
The shifter shaft is in TM Tractor's parts.
Also look in the hole when putting the PTO in, to put the pin in the slot.

The PTO pilot bushing, in the rear of the long clutch shaft, at the front of the PTO shaft, often wears out. People on here have said it is hard to shift the PTO into engaged if the bushing is wornout.

http://www.tmtractor.com/new/pt/pt_001newparts.htm

Below is the Cub and LoBoy service manual, I would read section 6A, the PTO section.
The manual has contents beginning on page 1 of most sections. :)

I plan on replacing the PTO shaft. I am having trouble sourcing the pinion drive collar part # 351265R12 it doesn’t seem to come up on any google searches. I have reached out to TM tractor to see if they might have the collar via email but haven’t heard back from them yet. Thanks for the help.

That coupler might be a difficult item to source. Probably easier and cheaper to pick up a good used right angle drive, they’re plentiful and usually reasonably priced. You might find a good used pto shaft, from the same source.

When looking for a used part like the right angle drive unit. What are the best places to look for the item?

Place a "wanted ad" in the Vine subforum and there may be a forum member that has an extra.

eBay as well. That $100 FB one is a good deal. Maybe someone close could pick it up for you and hand off if possible?

The pulley on that one looks nothing like the one on mine does that make a difference?
