Ih carb

Postby john2189 » Fri Jul 16, 2021 11:23 am

Cub would only run with full choke. Removed carb and inlet screen plugged. Noticed it had two bowl gaskets, so I took it apart and it was warped very bad. I straightened it as close as I could using a vise, c clamp , adjustable wrench and a file. I’m sure the gasket will take care of the rest.
I tried spraying cleaner through the idle tube but it is plugged. Ran wire through it but no help. I see I can buy new tube but how is it in there? Just a press fit or threaded? Don’t want to ruin anything. I have it soaking in solvent now, maybe that will open it up

Idle tube is threaded.

Just fought this myself...carefully unscrew it from the carb. Using carb cleaner and the wire you can clear the tube and reuse it.

The orifice opening is .021, so it needs to be a fine wire or sewing needle. While holding it tightly with pliers or vice grips, wiggle it back and forth a few degrees until it starts to loosen. If you just try to unscrew it there is a good chance you'll twist it off. McDonald Carb sells replacement idle needles for much less than OEM.
Edit: I meant to say McDonald Carb sells replacement idle "TUBES".

Thanks, I have a torch tip cleaning wire I can use. If I take out the idle screw and push a wire up the tube, shouldn’t I be able to see it through where the screw came from?

I think you'll need to clean the idle tube from the threaded end after it's removed. I think they are made by crimping in a short plug that is drilled and then the outside threaded. That would make it difficult to "find" the opening if it's clogged or corroded shut by inserting anything down the length of the idle tube. There is only about 1/8" of 4-48 threads.

Ok thanks, I was hoping not to try to take it out. I better wait to order the rebuild kit from TM until I get it out With my luck, I’d ruin it and have to buy a new one.

The meter jet is a piece of cake. It solved my problem with having to run with a full choke.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Mine was clear. The inlet screen was plugged with rust and dirt.

Mine was clear. The inlet screen was plugged with rust and dirt. That’s why it wasn’t getting gas.

Are you close to anyone who could bring it to the Tug and then return it to you?
