1963 Lo Cub
New Member here,
Just won a 1963 Lo Boy at only Government auction. Came with Howard Despeeder and a fast hitch. Brought it home on a trailer and went through 3 thunderstorm and then a nice rinse. Ad, says in storage for last 12 years, motor started 4 years ago.
Hook up battery charger, put some gas in the tank (added Sea Foam after we got it running), checked the engine oil, and fire it up. Ran on half choke until we choke it off at speed a couple times to suck what ever was in the carb out, LOL. Purrs like a kitten.
Will do a carb job and it definitely needs a new 6-volt battery. Ammeter shows it's charging!
Anyway, first cub, and will be looking for some rims, tin and tires. I have the rear fenders, but someone ran over them with something, and might not be salvageable.
I will post a picture when I figure that out.
Anyway, hope to learn and contribute,

Make sure you have oil pressure before you run it at any length. It only takes less than a minute to destroy a Cub engine with no pressure.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: 1963 Lo Cub
It has plenty of oil on the stick, but the gauge doesn't move. So, I will get a new gauge. I probably drove it about a mile, so if it didn't have any oil pressure, it would be junk by now.
Thanks,

That is very possible. If it has been sitting for a while it will not register on the gauge. Gauge may not be bad. It needs to be primed. Make sure you do that before starting again.

Re: 1963 Lo Cub
Hi,
Welcome to the website.
If a Cub has been sitting, the engine oil pump can lose it's prime, then it may not suck oil up again from the oil pan.
I wouldn't run the engine until you know if there is oil pressure, it will damage the engine to run it with no oil pressure.
If there is no oil pressure, you need to prime the oil pump, it is easy to do.
Below is a link for a post I made telling how to prime the oil pump. My post is about half way down the page.

If you remove the oil filter cover, and no oil has been there lately, after running the engine, the oil pump has lost it's prime, and no oil is circulating.

Re: 1963 Lo Cub
Thanks for the reply.
I have and have had plenty of old engines and tractors and have never had to prime an oil pump on one that has been sitting, even with ones similar to the cub, so this must be a cub thing.
So, with that said, I ran the tractor for over an hour and it runs perfect and idles fine, etc. If there was no oil pressure, then the engine in junk by now.
However, I will check it out before I run it again, that is for sure.
Thanks,
BaconFarms

Howdy!...Good looking Cub, I am curious about why it had a despeeder. That is a nice extra for sure!
As far as replacing the fenders and rims. Try reaching out to John Hargis at JP Tractor ( one of the site sponsors ) . He is very reasonable and shipping is fair as well. Here is a link to his website http://jptractorsalvage.com/inventory.asp

Re: 1963 Lo Cub
Thanks, Can't answer about the despeeder, except that it came with a sickle mower, or part of one. We tried the despeeder out and it worked.
It came from the WI DNR (Department of Natural Resources) experimental farm.
It seems all original and nothing buggered so far. The lights even work, except the one that is smashed, LOL.

Re: 1963 Lo Cub
Hi,
The LoBoy operator's manual can help you learn about maintenance that the LoBoy needs.
Below is the 1957 LoBoy operator's manual. The experts on here recommend people read it. It has lots of info about operation, maintenance, and lubrication. There is a table of contents on page 1, and the index begins on page 80.
It shows how LoBoys originally looked in it. The lube section begins on page 21.
http://farmallcub.com/rudi_cub/www.clea ... index.html
It shows the electrical system that a 1957 and 1963 LoBoy originally had.
LoBoys made before mid 1964 originally had 6 volt, positive ground electrical systems.
They have said on here that IH didn't make a new manual every year.
The Touch Control uses Case IH Hy-Tran fluid. It is sold at Case IH dealers.
There are other brands, be sure it works with IH hydraulic systems before buying one.
The manual tells how to check and change the Touch Control fluid, and remove the air from the system.
Be sure to check the fluid with the arms in the rear, or down position, the manual says to also.
I would check or change all the oils before using the LoBoy. Using it with low oil in a gear housing can damage the parts in the housing.
The manual shows what oils to use.
There are 3 separate gear housings, with 3 separate oil levels to check, in the rear area of a LoBoy, the transmission, and 2 final drives.
The transmissions in Cubs and LoBoys commonly get water in them, from rain, or condensation inside the housing over time.
The air cleaner is an oil bath air cleaner. Dirt that is sucked in settles to the bottom of the oil cup. It should have clean, light motor oil in the oil cup to work right.
There is a search box at the top of the page, to the right of the Farmall Cub, you can find info in posts that have been made.
The 1957 LoBoy operator's manual has more info than the 1959 Cub and LoBoy operator's manual, so I posted it.

New battery on Monday.
I also found a couple manuals in the bottom of the box of parts. Always a plus,

Nice to get the operator and owners manuals with it. What is that on the steering column? Tach?

Re: 1963 Lo Cub
There is an Allen plug on the right side of the rear of the engine that you unscrew and can prime the oil pump which most likely lost it prime. Take the plug out and with an oil can squirt about 10 pumps from and oil squirt can should do. Then you should have oil pressure…simple fix for worn oil pumps and long extended sits.

I have never seen that one. I use the hole on the left side of the block. It is hidden behind the hydraulic lines.
