Sluggish governor

Postby k hutchins » Thu Jun 03, 2021 6:41 am

Hey everyone

Some of you may remember that l bought and brought back to life another '48 last year. It has become my mowing tractor (5 acres) with a Woods 59.
The problem is that the governor is slow or sluggish to respond. It does work, and overall l'm pleased with my settings. I'm just looking for maybe a quick easy fix if there is one. I've seen previous posts where it is suggested that spraying the rocker arm from the outside might help. What is the reccomended lube?
Really hoping for a simple fix, otherwise it'll have to wait until the end of mowing season.

Thanks in advance for your responses

Hutch

I would just use a few drops of motor oil to lube the rock shaft pivot and all other pivot points of the throttle linkage.

I used pb blaster to loosen mine, then lubed with motor oil. How long does it take to mow 5 acres in 2nd gear?

One I run that is lubed wants higher R.P.M. (throttle) for faster (faster is not really the right term , more timely under load shift/increase in governor might be) governor action.

John
On average with my original '48 it took me about 3:45. My "new" '48 runs at a little higher RPM and now it takes about 3:30.
Even though it runs just a bit faster overall, after turns, going up hill, or through heavier grass, the governor just seems sluggish to respond to the extra load, even on an initial throttle up.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

Have you had the governor or carb off recently? If so did you adjust the linkage per the manual?
Have you ever replaced the spring on the governor? If not do so and retest.
Are all of the linkages from the throttle lever to the carb-free and easy to move by hand?
Is everything at carb-free and easy to move my hand?
Are any of the cotter pins in the linkage and at the carb hanging up or long? ( I started trimming cotter pins around the carb because I had some hang up on me)

In my experience, the problem is almost never the inside of the governor. It is usually outside.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!
