POAX Planter Question

Postby Tacosr81 » Thu May 20, 2021 3:50 pm

Hello I'm new to this and I own a Farmall Cub and I bought a 172 planter runner for this tractor I think I am missing parts for it but I'm not sure I tried to plant corn with it and the corn seed seems to just pop off the bottom of it I would appreciate any help to figure this out

Once you have a second post you will be able to access pdf manuals on this site. Then you can figure out what you have and what you’re missing. If you will post some pictures of what you now have you will get a lot more info from members here.

Can’t tell much from the pic. Got a pic of the hopper base? That’s the drive unit you have pictured. If it is a POAX, I will tell you it’s not the most desirable of the planter units. But no reason why it shouldn’t give decent results if we can figger out what’s wrong. From your description, it’s possible the seed plate does not match what you’re planting

That is a "SINGLE SEED HOPPER" , The corn and bean plates from a POAX will interchange with certain optional bottoms on the Single Seed hopper. There was several options on bottoms, you will need to research what you have. The red plate is from a POAX hopper, the notch is the easy way to differentiate the plates, it was to keep it from being installed upside down in the POAX corn planting equipment bottom.

Wow!

I would hate to have to find seed plates for that!

You need a corn plate with 16 cells!

I am questioning whether you could get the gearing sped up enough to get a decent spacing to plant corn with a 3 cell plate! (I dont have my book in front of me.)

(Currently), I like 9 to 10" between plants on 30" rows for corn, whether I am planting field corn or sweet corn.

The slower your seed plate turns (and gets your spacing right), the better! Less turns = less wear!

I was on the Lincoln Ag Products website the other day and they have planter plates they make for Massey Ferguson that looks similar to what your planter uses!

https://lincolnagproducts.com/product-c ... on-plates/

You would have to contact them for verification of the size and if they might work in your application!

Kinda shocked me what they are charging for planter plates now  $45 a plate!

That is just crazy money for something that probably costs less than $5 to mold, and less than a minute to make!!!
