Eugene- I thought I read it in the Service Manual could be mistaken I did the compression test Dry and know the manual says 120 lb but they figured that was a new engine and my 80-85 lb is low.

Don McCombs- so I put the D21 plugs in you recommended I also went ahead and changed the points. Tractor started right up twice and I’ve shut it down. Carb is leaking but new one will be here tomorrow and I’ll take care of it. Since I’ve got to pull the carb back off I’ll check and adjust the valves. Thanks for your help I’ll post some more as I work through them.

Where does the carb seem to be leaking from?

Yes I adjusted it but where the plug go into the bottom of bowl the threads are no good causing it to leak. I thought about taping it out and putting a bolt in it.

The drain plug is pipe thread, so I think PTFE (teflon) tape around the plug would work better than switching to a bolt.

Don, so I’ve got access to valves for adjustment and I’m unable to get feeler gauge in between so it looks like I need to lower it to gain 013 but it doesn’t seem to want to go in that direction the other (up) yes, please share your thoughts
I’ve been able to start and run the tractor 4 times but it seems to have a loud tick or slap at #1 cylinder that it’s never had until this year.

Valve adjusting procedure is on page 1-15, in the GSS-1411 Blue Ribbon Manual in the PDF Manuals section.

Your tick could be piston slap or one valve really loose on that cylinder. could also be wrist pin bushing wear or rod bearing getting worn. ---- use a screwdriver or steth. to see if the noise is down low or up high on the block, also which side of engine it's the loudest. sometimes that can help pinpoint the area of noise.
For the screwdriver method, hold the screwdriver to the block, then put your ear on the handle and you should be able to hear all kinds of strange noises in there! I use a regular mechanics steth. here ---- a REAL handy tool to have!

Sonny, so the noise is on the left side only, I got a stethoscope but couldn’t determine where sound was coming from.
The valves have been adjusted now and weren’t off by much at all.
