Touch Control Lines Leaking

Postby govmule84 » Fri May 07, 2021 4:07 pm

Hi.

I bought a new Cub. I noticed it had a small hydraulic leak.

Going through it since a ton of maintenance was... uh, "deferred." The fluids were all black as night... except the hydraulic fluid in the touch control unit, so methinks the previous owner might have known there was a problem.

I couldn't an obvious leak point, so presumed it was between the small line and the manifold block on the pump. I am a good welder, but a terrible brazer/solderer, so I had it soldered up. The good news is it does not leak, and the Touch Control now works fine.! The bad news is that now the other like leaks... I presume the heat loosened up the solder that was already there. I also had leaks at the gasket on the Touch Control unit itself, so I guess I need one of those, and I suppose I may as well do the O-rings at the other end.

What is the intelligent way to get my hydraulics going? Solder the other side and risk 'em cutting loose again? Buy extra blocks and machine them to accept modern hydraulic hoses? (I don't care what it looks like so much, I just want it to work!)

Advice from a more experienced member would be appreciated.

Thanks!

And I've successfully silver soldered them. Originally, they were furnace brazed so I doubt that the heat from soldering loosened the other line.

Thats good to know. No problem from contamination due to the original braze material? What filler rod did you use?

I silver brazed mine. Used Harris Safety-Silv 45 and Harris Stay-Silv white flux.

The quickest way to fix a set of leaky hydraulic lines, it to buy another set!

Mine started leaking where something wore a hole in one (maybe the choke rod, can not remember for sure).

I just happend to be at some guys place buying a plow, and saw a set he had sitting there, and for like 20 bucks they came home with me!

My old set it still sitting on the shelf. I should probably get them down and braze up the worn spot!

Did both lines at once, installed today with fresh O-rings and gaskets. Works mint.

Got a spare set of lines. I am gonna machine those to accept modern hydraulic rubber lines so I don't have to fool with this again.

FWIW, I misspoke earlier. These were silver brazed both times, not soldered. Solder wouldn't melt the existing fittings, no. Brazing temps sure would (and did), though!

Thank you all for the help.

Hi,
The choke rod is supposed to go slightly above the Touch Control tubes, if it is bent down, so it rubs on the tubes, the engine vibration might wear the rod into the tubes over time.
Below is a pic of how the rod should go. If the rod is too low, you can increase the bend in it, that is in the pic, and it should raise the rod up.
I think I have seen at least 1 pic where the rod was upside down. Check for that also. :)
