Re: Governor Or other help
Another thought. I have a paper filter in the line to the carb. Have not checked fuel flow past the filter. I have had trouble with paper filters in the past so tomorrow, I will pull filter out and see if that will make a difference. Just searching my friends, just searching...

Re: Governor Or other help
Since you say you have a magneto, I will offer that the governor gear timing (governor to idler) is critical to be correct. A magneto simply will not usually give you the leeway to be off one tooth. So pull the magneto and get the governor bear teeth lined up perfect first. Then the internal pinion to rotor must also be exact, sounds like that one checked out okay. Once those are correct, you should be able to static time the magneto to engine and run reasonably well. I have never put a timing light on a magneto cub, they run fine so long as things are timed. If timing doesn't fix it, then you've had several suggestions on other places to look.

When I originally took the magneto and governor off, I did not check the timing marks on the magneto and idler gear. They may have been set off a notch or two either way by the PO. I don't know.
Bad mistake on my part. With that being said, do any of you think that I should try moving the gear match up or back a notch and try it. This cub does have a lot of wear, but prior to me taking off the magneto and governor, it ran real well. Just looking for some help if you have any to share.
I can be of no help to you on this one, but I had a similar problem with a previous owner getting my magneto ignition out of time, so he just moved the plug wires off by one position on the cap. When I replaced plug wires, the tractor wouldn't start at all. It took me a while to realize it was goofed up somewhere I HADN'T had apart.

Go back and look at the first picture Glen posted:

With the engine set at TDC, the governor should be set so the drive slot is at the angle shown. It is 35 degrees from horizontal. If yours is not at that angle, pull the governor out and turn so it will be at that angle when put back in. That should be effectively the same place using the marks gets you. Then you can install the magneto as already described.

Set the engine at TDC, pull the mag and see if the drive slots look as Jim described. If not, set the governor so that it does. You really don't need timing marks to time the governor gear. I'm just about certain this is the problem.

Re: Governor Or other help
Does the lever arm on the end of the governor shaft move forward and back a little bit when you move the throttle lever full front to full back? When trying to start it, can you manually move the linkage from the governor to the throttle and get it to change speed? Watch your fingers near the fan if you're grabbing the lever arm.

Yes, this is gear tooth to gear tooth timing. so no matter where the throttle lever is set. Insure governor timing looks like the picture, then find and follow the instructions for static timing the magneto to the engine. It should start and run well there.

Re: Governor Or other help
Gentlemen, thanks for your help. Started all over again with static timing, making sure that all plug wires were on right plug, timing with top dead center as per the manual. Running like a top. Sometimes I get in a hurry and don't take the time to do things correctly.
Thanks for all of your posts and help.. Cub forum is the best!!!!!

Re: Governor Or other help
First, very glad to hear that it all worked out. Second, I want to congratulate you on stepping back to square one, listening to the advice, and going at it with a fresh unbiased mind. It sounds like you methodically worked your way right to the intended result. So many times it seems as if folks aren't quite willing to forget what they think they already know, and just start fresh. Congratulations, and you are a role model for how to systematically work your way trough an issue!
