What Paint?

Postby Barnyard » Mon Feb 01, 2021 1:36 pm

I have always used Valspar IH red and tractor/implement primer. My supplier now tells me valspar no longer makes that. What is everybody else using that is good other than Iron Guard or Majic?

I have had good luck with Iron Guard 2150 and Ace International Red. The color is slightly different between the two. Based upon reports here, I wouldn't touch Majic with a ten foot pole.

For painting parts I like Ace spray cans. It dries fast and matches well. Have not used it for large sheet metal or entire tractor.

Don. I tried Majic once and it was terrible. Iron Guard is probably best, but a bit pricy. I was wondering how the Rust-oleum IH Red was. I mainly want it for my steps and such.

Our local Ace closed last year. The nearest store now is a bit over a half hour. That is my next choice. I will probably need to order it on line.

I'm not sure Ace will ship. I believe it may be made by Krylon but not sure.

Funny in some circles there are people who wouldn't stoop to using such cheap paint as CaseIH 2150, and in others it's considered too pricey.

2150 is $63 a gallon where Ace International red is $32 a gallon.

In my experience the Ace rattle cans are not the same color red as the gallon paint. Not even close. The rattle cans are kind of purple and satin finish, where the gallon finishes out as a nice glossy bold red.

Okay, I found an Ace hardware 20 miles from me. It is 8 minutes from a Wal-mart store. I called the store and they have Ace Rust Stop in IH Red in stock. Since I need to go to Wal-mart anyway I will kill two birds with one stone. There is a closer Wal-mart, but this will work.

As I said, I mainly want it for my steps and such. I don't plan to paint a whole tractor. If it were for a tractor I would definitely use 2150.

Barnyard I have been powder coating high wear / high corrosion items like battery boxes and steps. For red I have been using https://www.eastwood.com/hotcoat-red-wagon.html. The color is very close. I sent some samples to TST. Said the color was very close but a little brighter

We are set up to do limited powder coating at work. But for $100 for a gun from Eastwood and used oven off of craigslist you could be set up.

I use Rustoleum farm and implement IH red and have been happy with it. I use the Ace hardware IH blue. I think the ace rattle cans spray better than rustoleum but I think the rustoleum holds up better. Both seem to match color wise to anything I had that I thought was original color. Close enough for the rebuilds I do any way.

No one’s mentioned VanSickle. I believe it to be priced about like Valspar, but not sure if it’s on par with it or not. Some of our local farm stores carry one or the other.
Believe you’re on track with Ace Rust Stop or Rust-Oleum for what you’re doing.

The last cans of IH Red at ace was way to pink looking.
