I have a 1948 cub that been repowered with power unit engine at some time in the past.
It has a dual groove crank shaft pulley!
In its original application as a power unit, what was the extra pulley used for?
Side note, this engine really revs up!
Thank you!

Re: Dual groove crank pulley on repowered cub
I believe that was a combine engine, and the 2nd groove powered the auger for the unloader to empty the bin. I have a 47 my loader is on that I replaced an engine with a broken ear using one of those engines. The original owner of my replacement engine wanted the dual groove pulley back though.

Re: Dual groove crank pulley on repowered cub
It is funny because I bought it at a consignment auction in Pa.
I was telling my brother how much faster it was, like it had a extra gear.
My brother was at a different auction here in Ohio, and was talking to a guy there.
For some reason he mentioned my cub being fast, the guy then described it to him asking him if that was it.
Here the guy my brother was talking to was the previous owner, and in fact said it did have a combine engine!
Small world!
But I had no clue what the extra groove was for!
Thank you!

Anyone know the horsepower and rpm of these c60 combine engines?

they used a governor that gave it more RPM, off the top of my head the #2250 rpm I think ?

Re: Dual groove crank pulley on repowered cub
My 1948 Cub doesn't have that dual pulley but it spins at 2650 RPMs. I had no idea it was different than others until I attended a Cub Fest at Rick Prentice's home in Ohio, where he was testing all comers on his dynamometer. The power band was exceptional, as well, and I still have the printout from the event. While sitting around the campfire that evening, others thought it could have a "power" generator. It doesn't sound like a typical Cub and not just because of the straight (no muffler) exhaust. No other explanations were offered, but I did some porting with the new 20-over bore and restoration work. Don't know if that alone accounts for the extra zip.

I have had all three governors ( power unit, cub and number cub) apart. the governor from the power units and the numbered cubs both use the same size weights but are different part numbers. The lighter weights let the c-60 run at 2400-2600 rpm in the cub. I think my stationary engine serial number plate is rated 2500 rpm. So you getting numbered cub HP in the standard cub and over 20% more turns with the same gears so it is faster.
The lighter weights do not have the tapper at the top.
When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

Re: Dual groove crank pulley on repowered cub
I can confirm that the engine with a second grove means the engine originally powered a combine. In my case it was a #60 pull type. The second grove was used for the unloading auger V belt.

That second groove can now be used for a new purpose - install a hydraulic pump to run a bucket.

Re: Dual groove crank pulley on repowered cub
The thought crossed my mind for a extra hydraulic pump, but, for what I would not know.
Not to offend anyone, but I like cubs without a loader!
Have a much bigger Deere with a loader!
