Does anyone known how the graphite is attached to the mount?
If it uses an adhesive, does anyone have an idea how hot the upper range needs to be?
Playing around with some ideas for using a more modern material like PTFE...

Re: Throwout bearing assembly
I think it is just pressed in (easy fit). If there was an adhesive, it would restrict the movement of oil from the grease into the graphite.

...and there are several more photos from CubFest Northeast 2011 when Dave Stevens and I cut apart a brand new broken throwout bearing.

Re: Throwout bearing assembly
Has anyone tried immersing in grease and then drawing a vacuum on the container to draw the grease into the graphite? This, of course, assumes the porosity of the graphite's grain structure is larger than the grease's particulate size. Since graphite is such an outstanding insulator, I am not sure how effective the heating up in an oven will be? Does it really help, or is it just the placebo effect?
In the photos, it looks like the red grease is just laying in the groove, and there appears to be no absorption into the graphite at all? Is that what the folks who cut it apart saw as well?

Re: Throwout bearing assembly
Sevy,
The oil in the grease is what is absorbed into the graphite. That is why you want to use “cheap” grease, i.e. grease that gives up the oil easily. High temperature greases are formulated so they don’t separate.
The cut apart TOB has the wrong grease, and even if it was correct nowhere near enough.

Re: Throwout bearing assembly
Has anybody used "cornhead grease" it is a very light grease almost an oil. I use it in some steering boxes that leak instead of 90w oil.
I buy it from the local Deere dealer. This might work on the clutch bearing.

Re: Throwout bearing assembly
I am replacing the clutch bearing and have been soaking it in ATF for 2 days. Should this be enough to start it and I will grease it till it comes out the bleed hole in the top?
