I need to replace the seal on the side of the trans where the axle goes in. Can I remove the 3 bolts and take off the retainer to do the seal?
I thought that I heard to not do this but to just pull the seal with the retainer in place. Thats what I have done in the past but this seal
looks to be rusted in bad.

Re: trans side cover seal
Hi,
The part the oil seal is in is usually tight in the transmission housing, it has an o ring to seal the oil in the housing.
It has a bearing race in it, and there are shims that space the differential gear to the right position.
It's easier to leave it where it is if it doesn't leak from the o ring, but some people take them out and replace the o ring.
If you try to remove it, be careful to not damage the shims. The same shims should be put in again if you don't disturb anything else there.
Below are pics of one from TM Tractor, the bottom pic shows the length of the retainer.

Re: trans side cover seal
That is why I never pull that retainer. I have had a hard time pulling the deal. I use a seal puller, hooks under the seal and rocks to pull it,
In the past I have had a hard time, it just breaks up the seal. This one looks like it is rusted in and I thought maybe I could take the whole thing out and pop the seal that way. Thanks
