Steering shaft ID
I think that the shafts for the 24 tooth gear were about 3" longer, but am not positive. Is there any other way to ID the difference if you don't have the gear to mate it to?

I believe you're correct on the length, Cubfriend will be along later with more details.

Re: Steering shaft ID
Yes. The difference can be readily seen at the steering wheel. The early wheel is very close to the shaft support. The later one is several inches away.

Re: Steering shaft ID
Hi,
I don't have one of each to measure, but here are pics from Cub operator's manuals.
You can see the length in the pics.
You could measure the length above where the shaft has been wearing in the upper holder.
Below is the front of the 1965 manual.

Re: Steering shaft ID
I have a few ends I have cut off to shorten
the difference in length is ~ 3.5" - what is shown plus a 1/16 for the band saw cut

When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

I had thought about mentioning the risk of measuring the length to tell them apart. . . .
You can probably tell them apart by looking at the gear, difference in thread pitch or the like. I'm not ready to take two tractors apart just to see the difference.

If you had a pic. of the two gears side by side, the difference very easy to see. There is a pretty significant difference in the pitch of the worm gear.

OK Don, I looked at them, not as different as I was thinking, a little different, though.

I should have thought to look there. There isn't a lot of difference in the appearance, but enough for identification if you have both pictures. The lengths of both are given along with the pictures, which pretty well answers the original question.

Re: Steering shaft ID
Here they are, straight from TM.
Early, 64-7/8 long.
Late, 68-1/8 long.
Another indicator, if you are looking at a used shaft, wear from the support bearing should be visible closer/farther from the threaded end.

Re: Steering shaft ID
Jim as usual is ahead of me.
I got an installed length of just over 60" for the short or early shafts and an overall length of 64 5/8th for the short but is was on I cut. So Jim is probably correct on the over all.
