C-2 mower blade mount

Postby inairam » Sun Jul 12, 2020 3:55 pm

I am still shaking down my c-2. I got the belt to stay on and I am fabbing up the missing belt guides.

I get some noise from under the deck. The shaft assembly or blade upper mount is bent up on both sides. No matter how much I tighten the bolt it makes point contact with the blade allowing the blade to rock up and down as well as rotate

Is It is supposed to look like that? The picture in the manual looks as if it is straight but it is hard to tell.

Charlie, It runs fine and cut grass well. I am just trying to find out the noise. I have a woods 42, a very similar design, and is quieter. The spindle is smooth. I do not think it is that. The bolts are all tight. This is the only thing I see that looks out of place to me.

BLADES.JPG

looks like the wrong bolts installed to start with.
Are they supposed to be shoulder bolts to allow the blades to swing?
I don't think these blades swing/move.

grease.JPG

looks like grease leaking..

The manual says to lube the spindle every 8 hours and the overrunning clutch twice a season.
I only see one grease zerk on the hub of the pulley ( looks like that would lube the overrunning clutch).

Looks like the blades are drooping a little. How much of the apparent turn up of the mounting point is due to the droop of the blades?

When the mower is spun up to operating speed, the blades are going to come up some.

Jim, the blades on my c-2 are not drooping as far as I can tell. they are parrel to the bottom plate/bar. The upper bar has a flair up. The blade on my c-2 do not go down but they can go up until they hit the flair up part

Re: C-2 mower blade mount

Postby inairam » Fri Jul 17, 2020 7:42 pm

When I got the mower some years ago I noticed there were no bushings in the blades and I put bushings in. The damage was done to the bolts. The threads and metal were gone in the middle from no bushing. But I thought it was ok at the time. With thise issue I took the bolts out and tired to tighten the nut and it would lock part was down. Now I decided to replace the bolts (a small fortune) and I was able to tighten the bolts a bit more, a little less up and down

I also removed the spindle from the deck to do this. There were two correct 5/8th bolts and two smaller bolts and nuts holding the spindal in place. I put in 4 grade 8 5/8 bolts with flat washers and lock washers and was able to tighen the spindal down very well. I think this and not the blades was the main source of the noise. A vibration in the spindal mounting casued by the mount being less than tight.

So the good news is the the mower is now much quiter.

The bad news is in taking the spindal and pulley off I learned the clutch is not forzen. A PO welded the clutch to the spindal!!

found it. upon farther inspection turns out the grease zerk for the spindle was broken flush.
it came out easy enough and has been replaced...

In a contuned effort to reduce the vibration this weekend I took off the blands again and weighed them with a digital fish scale before and after sharpening. There was little or no change using the ounces setting.

The fish scale also has a tape and using mm they are the same length.

One blade was 63 oz and one was 59 oz. Is this too much of a difference? I happen to have a long hook for the battery box close by and that is about 4 oz. +/- 2 oz on an average 61 oz is +/- 3.3% with a total of 6.6% difference.

I think that is probably too much of a difference.

I also replaced the bushing and clutch in the pulley.
The PO had welded the clutch to the pulley. After seeing the old clutch and finding out how much they are I understand why.

Still the C-2 can push the Cub forward standing on the brakes and Clutch. The mower clutch is important. It is a lot easer to use and stop with the clutch working.
