Hydraulic Lift-All bogs down engine

Postby fordhead1983 » Tue Apr 28, 2020 9:40 am

This has been an issue since I rebuilt "Little Red" a few years ago and has baffled me ever since. :lost:

I rebuilt the pump, and touch control block with the kit I got from local Case IH dealer when I was a parts guy there. Replaced both filter screens, springs, and little plastic valves. Filled with Hy-Tran. Cycled the living daylights out of it: three years running a sickle mower in the waterways, planter and cultivator and side dresser in the garden, mower deck in the yard. So I know there's not air in the system. It's not leaking into the crankcase. Oil level is fine.

It lifts perfectly. Lowering pulls the engine down bad. When the engine is cold, it is enough to kill the tractor. Don't have access to a pressure gauge, but thought if anybody had any ideas or if this topic has been discussed earlier... :help:

Are you lowering at idle or operating RPM?

OK. All Cubs pull the RPM down slightly when lowering. But it shouldn’t be excessive.

The lowering circuit has a flow restriction, intended to keep implements from crashing down. It is normal for it to put a noteworthy load on the engine. It isn't unusual for it to stall the engine if the engine is cold and running at a slow idle. It will not normally stall a warm engine or one that is running above about half way up the speed range.

Ok, so I'm just chasing my tail, trying to find things to fix, going Corona Crazy, etc. It works the way it should then. Thanks guys!

I doubt it'll get any worse as it's been the same for 3 years...
