C22 Sickle Bar mower too far forward

Postby 790rivers » Wed Mar 25, 2020 10:11 am

My 1947 cub is running well, but now I want to get the sickle bar mounted and am having trouble. In the photos you see the drive is not plumb with the PTO pulley. And at the flywheel, the spacers don't look like I would gain enough by removing them or transferring them to the rear. The PTO has only one cotter pin hole, so I can't get that upper drive pulley any more forward either. This mower came with a different, later cub: is that a clue to the problem? Many thanks for any solutions,

Post a photo of the front mower mount.

I already took it off the cub, but I could remount. What are you looking to see? I think the front bracket was hanging correctly, staying vertical. The large lower pulley at the back was scraping against the bolt head that goes through the bracket, which I also thought indicated that the shaft was too far forward.

You might have a Loboy mower. http://www.tmtractor.com/tm-tractor/gim/22com_001.htm
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

In your first photo, it looks to me like the front hanger is bent.

It is definitely a C22, not an L22, and yes, the front bracket is a little bent, but I didn't think it was bent that much.

Only a little bit of it is showing in the picture. But I'm thinking maybe it is bent that much. That may be why Don was asking for a picture of it.

Even if isn't bent enough to cause the whole problem, it is clearly bent some in a direction that would make the problem worse. So straighten the hanger and see how much of the problem is left.

If I am looking at the pic right, looks like the pto pulley is on backward. This would cause pulleys not to aline.

Agree with Jim(And Don). Also, can’t tell what washers are where in your photos. Have you checked with the manual on their placement? I’ll take a look at mine when I get home

Unfortunately, according to TM's photo gallery, it looks correct:

Ron, it’s on ‘right’ but something doesn’t look quite right about it, doesn’t it? Looks like it may be little loose and hanging at a slight angle. But that could just be angle of photo. And the angle of the belt probably adds to that illusion

Yes, it was. Just wanted to see how bad the whole thing was. In addition to being bent, it may also be excessively worn.

Can’t tell you the number of those pulleys ive seen with a sharp edge on the outer diameter from it rubbing

I'm not sure this is the case here, but in the past. Folks have had difficulty with alignment and movement of the shaft. Are you sure you have the right number/thickness of washers at the rear by the drive pulley? Might check through the Set Up instructions:

It sure looks like that front hanger is angled. It should be dead vertical.
