How long to build oil pressure?

Postby BQUICK » Sun Feb 09, 2020 8:32 am

How long to build oil pressure after sitting a few weeks? Does the oil filter housing drain back into pan?

I started and after 10 seconds of no oil pressure I shut it off. Then tried again and it came up.

Seemed like it took as much time as when I changed oil and filter.

Is that normal?

when engines get old and the bearings get worn the clearance gets wider so it takes a little longer to get oil pressure up, worse in cold weather

Had a thought...
How bout adding a fitting to oil pan or drain with an outboard motor squeeze bulb to pump oil into primer hole?
Could leave it all attached and use it every cold start.

Or is it not really an issue since oil film is on bearings until pressure builds?

Yes, the filter housing will drain down over time. When the engine is started, the gage will not show pressure until the filter chamber has re-filled. Not to worry, though, the oil galleys, feeding the crankshaft, are pressurized as soon as the pump is pumping. I've always felt that the filter housing is a poor location to read oil pressure from.
