Governor Arm Hole Wear

I have a Cub that wasn't running too good. Ran fine, but wouldn't run to full throttle. Would run to about 1/2 throttle and just hang there.

So I fashioned a pony tank so I could keep testing after I removed the hood. The tractor seems to run great on the pony tank, so maybe my initial problem was fuel related.

But while I have the hood off, I thought I would see what I could do to the governor. It has never been very responsive since I revived the tractor several years ago.

I thought I would start by seeing how much slack I could take out. I got everything out of the way and the governor spring removed. It seems that the lower arm coming off of the governor has quite a bit of wear.

What do you think of the wear in the lower hole?

What's the fix? Remove, reweld, redrlill,& reinst

Welding is probably the best fix. I did repair one by drilling a larger hole and inserting a section of roll pin.

That piece is probably cast iron is why it wears there. If it is you can weld it but it may get hard and be real hard to drill.

Could it be cast steel? Believe you were the one who suggested that to me on a past Farmall AV question I had.

I, too, have done it this way and the results have been very satisfactory.

What about drilling and tapping for a 1/4"-20 set screw? Drill point the shaft to give the set screw some additional bite....

Not sure if you could braze it or not. If you could it would drill a bit easier. Dont think JB weld would hold very long,---never tried it.

Agree about JB Weld. Too much friction from the spring. It would wear out very quickly.

Thin steel tube with correct ID. Cut to length. Drill out the hole to accommodate the cut length. Solder in place.

You should be able to get the arm up to temperature with a small propane torch.

I would go with solder instead of brazing because soldering is at a much lower temperature. Brazing might distort the arm.

I agree with Bill and Bob (BILLYBOB?) roll pin is the way to go.

How about J B weld the roll pin or small bushing in place. The wear would be on the roll pin or bushing.
