From the day I bought my '48 Cub the starter was very weak. I replaced the battery, cleaned all the connections, new starter switch etc. It would finally crank but rather weakly and was questionable whether the starter would spin it with drag from the throw out bearing when the clutch was depressed. I assumed this was normal for a 6V starter.
The other day I was doing my (overdue) fall maintenance and installed a new grommet on the battery box. Since my (-) cable has a clamp on battery connector I removed it to thread the cable through the grommet. Everything seemed tight and was clean.
After connecting back up the starter spins with authority! No problem cranking the engine with the clutch in and this is cold at 32 F.
The lesson is if your 6 volt tractor isn't cranking well something is still wrong.
Now I have to figure out which starter gremlins remain on the H........

Re: Interesting 6V starter miracle
Congratulations on getting it to start better. At least now you now you don't have a starter problem. It is advised to put the trans in neutral and leave the clutch out when starting. This is to reduce the clutch drag.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Re: Interesting 6V starter miracle
If you had a bolt on clamp on the cable they are bad for connections, they were made for temporary use, you cannot bear a soldered on end

Re: Interesting 6V starter miracle
Your story reminds me of the "starter problem" that I had years ago (on a Porsche 356). Replaced the starter, no change, replaced the battery, no change. Cleaned that stupid bolt-on connector at the battery. Presto! Expensive lesson.
