Radiator leak

Postby wileyg » Sat Dec 28, 2019 10:17 pm

I have been leaking radiator fluid since summer but recently got serious about where its coming from. As best as I can tell its escaping from the overflow tube. My overflow tube is broken at the radiator neck so the fluid runs down the radiator. I removed the grill to get a better look and its definatly wet around the base of the neck. My question is could a new pressure cap keep the fluid from escaping through the overflow tube? My cub had a pressure cap since I bought it.

It's possible that it is just spewing out excess antifreeze, if you are topping it off. All of mine have their own idea of what "full" should be, and spit out the rest!

What year is your cub? Earlier cubs did not use pressure caps. Someone else will probably know the year they started using them. My '55's and '56 all have unpressurized radiator caps.

The top of the radiator is the expansion tank for when the fluid heats up to operating temperature. When the fluid is cold, it just needs to cover the ends of the tubes. As the fluid heats to operating temperature it expands and fills the tank. Your problem may be overfilling the radiator.

Hi,
If the overflow tube has come loose from the radiator filler neck, some of the people on here have said it can be soldered on again.
One person said it is not something to do if you have never soldered before, the filler neck is soldered in, I think, and can come loose if overheated while soldering the overflow tube. :)

Thanks guys. I must have been over filling it. When its done spewing I'll keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't continue to loose fluid.

When I check my '47, I rock the tractor side-to-side to see the level. Anything higher than that and I get an anti-freeze shower when the Cub is warmed up!
