Locking Differential ???

Postby BullDAWG » Mon Oct 28, 2019 4:43 pm

I think I remember seeing a post on here way back, about having a locking differential on either a cub or SA. Does anyone know if they make such ??? No I don't want to weld up spider gears I do want to make turns LOL... Also if anyone knows when did IH start adding them to their tractors and what was it on...

Thanks Chris

Having a loc rite locking differential insert inplace of the spider gears would be awesome but you can’t use the dual brakes because both rear wheels are pulling at the same time. Each axle gear will unlock in a turn when making a left or right turn. But I noticed in my one ton truck and Jeep tractor when the power is under a load all four wheels stay engaged pulling till the load is off. Locking diff’s rock in 4x4 vechicals. In single brake pedal tractors maybe.

I don't Recall IH ever offering a locking Differential for the cub.

I wonder if the Cadet pullers probably engineered something at one time

They weld the spider gears to the axle gears then the spider gears to the carrier get welded.

No locking diff was ever produced but if you look up loc rite differentials there easy to install inplace of the spider gear assembly. I’d love to have a loc rite locking diff in one animal tractor.

My one ton rack body firewood truck had two lockers f&r. My Jeep tractor has two lockers f& r. You can jack up three tires and both vechicals will still move.

Having split brakes is a really big help when one tire goes to spinning. Just apply brake to the side that is spinning and more power goes to the side with traction.

I was thinking on these lines. Years back I used to tow a boat with a Buick Skyhawk. Folks used to stand by the ramp and were sure I’d never get it up the ramp then be dumb founded when I did without wheelspin. That car had an open rear diff too. I would gently pull up in the emergency brake while gently adding throttle.
The e-brake would fool the diff into feeling equal grip to both wheels and distribute traction to both wheels. This only works if you go slow and easy. Perhaps the same can be done with a Cub or A. I’ve tried with some success but it’s tricky.

Differential locks were a thing in Europe before it caught on in the US. The B-275 (1958) had one. I think the earlier B-250 did as well, but not sure. I don't know if the German tractors did by then or not.

Yep, our 424 has one. I don't think the American-built IH tractors got them until the 66 series and then it was an option.

My old bolens tractor has a diff lock and a real hi n low that’s why the tranny is still here.

Driving a 4x4 with lockers f&r is a whole new driving experience. When in a slide steer the direction you want to go and hit the gas. She will pull right out.

My 85 Chevy 1 ton has a Detroit Locker in the rear and a limited slip up front. Yes it feels way different than my 2000 Silverado and my 2005 Suburban 4x4's as both of them have limited slip in rear and dawg legged in front. The old Chevy I can't get stuck while the other 2 have. (tip of the day, don't go into a field thats been chisel plowed and disked LOL)(ask me how I know LOL)

I had a 406 Unimog with front and rear air lockers. An air piston slid a sleeve across the axles and all tires turned. It went straight real good, but you had to unlock to turn. It was just a little switch by the 20 speed shifters. With 60" tall Michelins it went almost through everything.

I was cutting/ logging trees in places only a skidder would go with my k30 with two lockers. I was in places you wouldn’t walk through I’d drive through it. Even in the winter with snow and ice I put tire chains on the outer dual wheels to get me in there. Coming out with 15 k gvw I had no problem getting out with no chains.
