Hi,
Below are pics from TM Tractor of a final drive pan. They originally look like this pan. Sounds like something was added to yours. :)

Terry,
Sounds like a “farmer fix” for filling the pans with lubricant.
My ‘57 does not have anything like you describe.

Don't see anything in the parts manual about an extra bolt.

Looks like somebody made a fill plug.
There are two ways to get enough Cubs. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.

Or could be an oil level plug, to see if there is any oil left...sort of like the lower of the two ports on the left side of the Super A engine oil pan for checking the engine oil level...a FULL plug. You'd then use the regular FILL plug on the housing to add oil, if nothing came out the pan bolt hole.

Just my guess!

When I saw the picture I had the same thought. As small as those are they would not be very handy for installing fluid.

I was thinking while my finals are apart to install 1/4” npt pipe plugs over the drive pinion gear and figure out where to install drain plugs so maintenance can be done easily on the finals. It a silly IH design not being able to change the oil or add oil easily. Maybe the drain plug on the bottom of the final pan needs a skid plate to protect it. I’m talking a highboy here.

I run a moly gear additive in all my geared transmissions and I could take for ever trying to get moly in that 1/8” pipe plug hole.

The old fruit can with the wire handle to catch the leakage trick. See these cans years ago in the barns with the old timers.
