Generator Band

Postby Gary Puckett » Sat Jan 12, 2019 11:52 am

I was cleaning up a used generator that I recently bought. I accidentally broke the fragile liner inside the dust band that seems to be made of heavy paper or something like it. Do you have any suggestion on what to make a replacement out of?

How about cutting a strip out of a heavier plastic gallon jug?

I've seen the local electrical repair shop use duct tape and install the metal band over it, then cut off the excess outside the edge of the band.

I've made one with paper gasket material, whatever the lightest weight was that I had on hand. One of my tractors came with a plastic band cut from a jug. It probably would have worked better if he had started with a round jug.

Thank you all for the ideas. The duct tape made me think about the aluminum tape used for HVAC.

I never considered the insulation factor. Now I know why the original was non-conductive. I pictured the aluminum tape being firm and not sagging. Thanks

15 pound roofing paper. Provides some moisture protection as well as dust prevention.

I would go with the gasket paper personally. The roofing felt would be my 2nd choice.
You don't want it to be conductive, and l think cardboard would also attract and hold unwanted moisture.
Why is there never enough time to do the job right, but always enough time to do it over. :?:

When I was rebuilding my SA, and I got to the starter, I had asked the same question. A few folks mentioned the roofing felt, and I jut happened to have some. Used it and it's been good since. :D

This /\
Duct tape does have its uses. One I like is as a rim strap for motorcycle rims that use a tube or on a tractor rim over a questionable spot that might punture the tube. These days my go to tape is gorilla tape as it’s much thicker and has better adhesive.
