Bellcrank Extension ?????

Postby yellercub » Thu Dec 20, 2018 7:09 pm

When I bought my1970 Cub back in August, it came with a bellcrank extension mounted on the rock shaft, and I paid it no mind until a few days ago. I have been cleaning up and attaching the L 54 blade I bought with the Cub, but when I went to attach the lift arm to the rock shaft I could not for the life of me figure it out. After some searching, it appears I have a bellcrank extension that was only made to work with the blade belly mounted. I found a bellcrank extension that is made to use when the blade is front mounted and it seems it would also work when belly mounting the blade.
My question is, what possessed IH to make a bellcrank extension that is belly mount specific? Is there some logical reason for this I am missing? :lost:

They didn't. Is this the way you have yours mounted?

It is now that I have that bellcrank ext. The other one doesn't look like that.
I found a picture of a manual that shows the type I have. somewhere on the internet, but didn't take note of it. I will have to see if I can find lt again.

L 54 blade is for a loboy Cub.

Is your cub a loboy?

Here are some photo in TM tractor website http://www.tmtractor.com/tm-tractor/gim/gim_001.htm

When you only have 9 horsepower you need to know the names of all of the ponies!

Hi,
Below is the Cub 54 Blade owner's manual. It has lots of info. There isn't a newer manual in the group of manuals I saw. You don't use the manual lift lever it shows in it, if you have touch control.

I don't know if you have a blade the same age as the tractor or not. The newer blades were white. :)

Cub-54 Leveling and Grader Blade 6-7-53 page 7 is what I have as a bellcrank ext. The plow is yellow and marked L-54 or was before I repainted it. Cub is not a LowBoy

The part that mounts to the bell housing does not look like the loboy plow but like the standard Cub model

Well guys there it is on page 7. The illustration clearly shows a different bellcrank ext. than the one shown for front mounting. Can anyone explain the point of the 2 bellcrank extensions?

Some pictures would help, but I suspect you have the one for the original McCormick Deering blade, The others are the later improved versions just as the other blades are improved versions.

I think you're probably right. My Cub came with a blade that was missing some parts. Not near enough to front mount it but everything to belly mount but the bell crank extension. Since I'm only going to belly mount it I made the simpler McCormick Deering version of the bell crank extension.

Here is a picture of a McCormick Deering bell crank extension:

He is right, the Cub-54 Leveling and Grader Blade 6-7-53 manual clearly shows two different bellcrank extensions. Weird...

Hmmmmm….. I see what you're saying. However I have never seen one like the one shown in Illustration 7. Did it actually make it into production?

I have a homemade extension. It is incorrect, but works fine for my purposes for front and belly mounting.
