York or Yard rake....

Ok gents. Wish list for next year time. As noted, I have a nice 3 pt hitch setup on my Cub (Thanks again Rick Prentice). I've seen something called a York (name brand) or yard rake. Supposed to be good for raking rocks out of a yard, smoothing a gravel driveway, etc. Right? :? :?

I've seen pictures of some with wheels, and others without. Which one is the best - especially with 3 pt hitch? Also, just how good are they with raking up leaves?

I'm curious about this device as I have a 190' gravel driveway, rocks in the yard, and several trees where leaves fall during the fall. I'd much rather ride and rake than mess with anything else. You know, the seat thing deal. :{_}: :||): :-:-): :-:-): 8)

Thanks in advance for the advice and opinions.

Oh! What size should I get? I'm thinking along the 4 foot sub compact tractor size to match the Cub's size.

Not goof for raking leaves!! If you set your rake to barely skim the ground to capture the leaves and you run over a slight depression or slope in your yard you WILL rip up oyur lawn!! Trust me, I know from experience.

A York rake is good for removing debris like twigs and sticks, small logs from a cleared soil bed (like just before you lay sod). They also work wonders on a gravel drive to spread the gravel out. The tines on a york are rigid and not flexible like a yard rake.

I don't know, maybe there is someone out there that has mastered the york rake for removing leaves from their yard but I do know that I look at a fairly large divot and bare spot on my neighbors front lawn everytime I drive by.... :D

The best thing for raking leaves is this:

Can't beat it. Will pick up leaves, straw, pine cones, small sticks, and just about anything else laying in the yard. Pull rope dump so you don't have to get off the tractor. Check out this link:

(I don't work for or own any of this company's stock! :D )

Don't know about the 'York' style rake, other than what people have posted here for use on the driveways. I believe this is a landscape rake and would tear the yard up if trying to rake leaves with it. Don't know though, never used one.

Thanks folks for the information. I was thinking of trying to help get the leaves closer to the garden area easier so I can compost them into the soil. Maybe I'll have to rethink things a little bit.

I can place an emphatic vote for the lawn sweeper too! I have had one for years and without fail, there is at least one time a year where you cannot get the lawn mowed before it gets too long. The lawn sweeper makes an easy job of getting the grass clippings out of the way. Also great for leaves.
As has been mentioned, a york rake is for landscaping and cleaning large debris from soil. Not for use on leaf raking etc.

Thanks Bigdog. Those yard rakes are expensive, and if they don't do any better job than that, I can stand to find something else to work with.

I dug these out of the barn today and mounted them on the rear cultivators. They should be mounted up front I guess, but did not want to mess with that. I had the rears on to dig up my barn floor, so when I was done put these on to drag the driveway and to pile/rake a bunch of grass out of it from when I plowed and graded the driveway last week.

they worked ok, but would have been better spread out up front. the springs on the cultivator arms kept it from tearing up the grass.

Wow Dale! Those look very handy. I'm going to keep thinking about this. I read something about a pine straw raker too. Maybe I can get some ideas from that.
