I have a yellow and white cub low boy. The identification tag on the right side front lower section reads serial no. 18374. J
What year and model does this represent.

Thanks. I wasn’t sure since what I found it could have been a 1954 or 1964 so I’m going to assume it’s a 1964.

Welcome to the Forum, Cub Loboy tractors were first made in 1955. Beginning serial number was 501 and the color was red just like the regular Farmall FCub. Stan
 
Hi,
There is also serial number info at the top of the page at Cub Info.
If you go to the serial number list, go down the page, and change the info to LoBoy serial numbers.
They are different than Farmall Cub serial numbers.

It says 18374 is a 1964 LoBoy. The model is on the serial number plate. It is an International Cub LoBoy.
The serial number list says the LoBoys were changed to the newer style hood, and yellow and white at serial number 17201, which was made during 1963.
If the plate has been painted over, you probably can't read the model name, or other words that were there. The pics of serial number plates in the info Dale posted show what the plate looked like.
The last plate on that page is the style a 1964 LoBoy had. :)
 
I have a weak spark and can’t get my cub to start. I’ve replaced all the ignition parts from plugs ,wires and all the components of the distributor. Triple checked all settings and a new carb. I’m assuming I need a new coil since the spark on the plugs is very weak so where’s the best place to buy a American made one?
 
Hi,
It is sort of common for the spark of the original Cub or LoBoy coils to become weak.
The LoBoy may have the older style of coil, with posts for wires at both ends. The new coils are the style cars used in the past, with all 3 posts at one end.
They are a bigger diameter than the old coils IH used. You need a different bracket to put the new style coil on it.
You didn't say if your LoBoy is 6 volts, or if someone changed it to 12 volts.
TM Tractor Parts sells coils, below are listings, you can look at the pics. The coil is 6 volts, they have 12 volt coils also.

They have said on here that coils from NAPA auto parts are good too. I'm not sure if they are made in the USA. They may not have a bracket that fits a Cub or Loboy, I don't know.
 
Thanks I’ll check it out. It’s a 6 volt system and looks like the original coil. Can’t quite figure out why it won’t start. It try’s to start and runs for a few seconds sometimes but mostly just sputters. I’ll replace the coil and go from there.

Good luck finding any parts made in america ( unless new old stock)!!! It aint gonna happen! Sad but thats where we are nowdays.
Your starter is killing the ignition power on 6-v more that likely cause it wont turn over fast enough. IF compression is low that adds to the problem. 12-v solves this. All of the cubs and #'rd loboys I have left here are factory 12-v and they gotta spin over fast to get going and keep running.! Gotta get the revs up. Can you pull start it??? After that and run it hard for a while will sometimes bring compression up enough to get them to start if they dont sit too long!
If mine sit for 2 weeks or more I gotta prime the manifold before they will start. Have a 340, a 504, and a 2444 same thing! no prime= no start! Its an IH thing,-- they dont like alki gas!
 
What's your knowledge/experience on using the choke?

If it fires and runs for a few seconds, some judicious use of the choke will probably keep it running. Start with quick "blips" of choke. Every tractor is a little different, and you'll need to learn what your tractor wants to stay running until it's warmed up. Sometimes all it takes is one quick blip, sometimes you need to set it and forget it for a minute.
 
Your symptom is a common behavior from a bad condenser. Out-of-box failure of new ones is not uncommon. If you put in a new one and still have the one you removed, try swapping the old one back in.

Most of my Cubs start up with very little choke. Much of the time, I pull the choke fully on, hit the starter. In a few revolutions they fire up and I immediately push the choke fully or most of the way open. If the engine is warm, I may not have to touch the choke. The "fully or most" and "may not have to" are individual differences from one tractor to another. My one tractor with a Zenith carburetor is different. It seems to want a lot of choke to start and continues to need some until it warms up. Even then, I usually stall it at least once. Since I only have one, I don't know if it is this specific tractor or if it is the nature of the Cub/Zenith combination. See it here:

The cub ran all last year. Had a major oil pan leak so I replaced the gasket and at the same time went thru the oil system and made sure everything was clean and all oil access passages were clean and open. Plug’s were very old so decided to do a complete tune up and replaced everything from the plugs down to and including the distributor components. New oil filter,cleaned and replaced the oil in the air filter unit, new carburetor, and now new ignition oil. Starts and runs good for about 10 seconds starts to sputter and stops. Sometimes can keep it going a little longer by adjusting the choke but still something isn’t right. I need to readjust the throttle linkage from the carburetor to the governor. Trying to find some instructions on how it’s done.
