Woods or IH finish mowers...

Somewhat new to the forum, but have been reading & searching various posts.
I recently picked up a 68 Cub with the Woods59 finish mower on it, about 10 years ago I had a 53 Cub with the IH labeled finish mower on it.
I'm not really liking the cut I'm getting with the Woods...or my memory's going, because I remember the 53 with the IH deck cut a lot better.
That is till it chucked a spindle & well...lets just say it was bad.
Seems like my 53 felt a little more powerfull too :big give up:

Anyways, is there a preferred make or type of finish mower used with Cubs?

By the looks of things, you have really nice pieces of equipment, both mower and tractor, so I'd take some time to read through the owner's manual and make sure the mower deck is adjusted front to back correctly. This makes a HUGE difference on the mower cut! I cannot remember which way it needs to be, higher in the front, or higher in the back, but regardless, one way they will cut fantastic, and the other way they will hardly cut at all.

Also, I'd do a tune-up on the tractor. It looks fantastic, but if some things are off just a little, you can loose significant power. Especially important are the timing and the valve adjustments. If either are off even a little bit, it will really rob the engine of power. If you're not familiar with working on the Cub engine, it will run in almost any condition, but it only runs really well when it's properly tuned, and the 60-inch mower decks really put a lot of draw on that engine, so you need every ounce of power you can get out of it. I'd run really good fuel in it, SeaFoam, and put in new spark plugs too. These things are cheap, but they make a pretty big difference.

Others will likely chime in on the setup of the Woods mower, but I can assure you that once it's setup correctly, it will cut as good as nearly any other mower out there.

Also, welcome to the forum and feel free to ask away.

Good luck,
Bill

Mower blades sharp?

Conduct compression tests on engine.

Type of grass you are mowing makes a big difference in mower and tractor performance.

I have a Woods 42 belly mounted and an IH 3260 belly mounted mower. For slugging it out with heavy grass, the 42" Woods is a much easier work load on the tractor than the 60" IH mower.

Slightly higher in the back. If it's higher in the front, the grass gets cut twice with each revolution of the blade.
