Wiring issue

hi everyone,
The other day I replaced the fuse on my cub, as the old one was blown and my headlights weren’t working. Clearly it was blown for good reason because when I tried my headlights out the volt meter shot way negative, the new fuse blew, and I got some pretty serious smoking from the wiring around the light switch. I know practically nothing about electrical, so it would be great if someone could point me to why this happened and how I can go about fixing it. Cub is original 6V system.
Thanks!

fuse blew , connection or wire probably grounded out against metal somewhere, I would start by disconnection wire from headlight then turn the light switch on with a new fuse and see if it blows out, if it does not blow problem is in the lights, if it blows check wiring

You didn't mention what yearr your Cub was. There are different switches for a few diff yr Cubs. If you do need to rewire, that info could help us help you.
Stn and tst have you headed in the right direction for trouble shooting tho.

1954 is the year. I have the off/dim/bright controls for the two headlights and one rear light. Thanks

Thanks for the tip. I disconnected the headlights and turned the switch the fuse did not blow. Any idea on what to do now for the next step?

Inspect the wiring to the lights from the point you disconnected it, especially where it passes through the hood sheet metal. If you have a wire connect/disconnect point at the lights you could remove the connections at the lights and repeat the fuse test. JMHO Stan

if the fuse did not blow with lights disconnected at the lights means the lights are the problem, hook them back up one at a time, when fuse blows that tells you where the problem is
