Which motor oil to use?

I know its a stupid question. But its time to change the oil. The 47 cub is used to cut grass. Is run hard / full throttle most of the time.
So which oil should I use?

I use straight 30 weight Penzoil in mine. But, the book calls for 20 weight for work below 80 degrees, and 30 for over that. I just use the 30 year round though, as the little feller holds excellent oil pressure. 15-40 might be a touch heavy, but you may have different results.

Most of us use the same oil we use in our cars/trucks. Oils have been improved so much over the years that what the manual recommends no longer matters as much as it did, A good 10w-30 will be fine.

Hi,
Below is the 1947 Cub owner's manual. The experts on here recommend that people read it, It has lots of info about operation, maintenance, and lubrication. There is a table of contents on page 1.
The lubrication section starts on page 14. :)

The manual has no Touch Control info. That is in the newer owner's manuals. You can get to them at the top of the page at Cub Info. Then go to Rudi's Manuals.

I would check all the oils, and be sure they are not low. Low oil in a gear case can damage parts.
A Cub has 3 separate oil levels to check in the rear area. The transmission, and 2 final drives.
The trans commonly get water in them from rain, or condensation in the trans over time.
The air cleaner oil cup needs clean oil.
The steering gear oil needs checking or changing.
The owner's manual shows how to check and change them.

I use Shell Rotella 15-40 in my Cub, H, M, and many others. It has a higher zinc content which is supposed to be better for flat tappet cams. It says it's for diesel engines but works well in any older tractor.

I use Case/IH low ash 30wt engine oil available at Case/IH dealers.
Out of curiosity, how much is it a quart?
I paid about $26 for a gallon at Case/IH. I believe Hoober and some others sell it also. If you want to go crazy there's a vendor on Ebay asking $9 a quart plus $9 shipping. :D

I’m sure it’s overkill for my tractors but I use Mobil 1 10w-30. Even if it’s Very hot (overhearing) it will still protect very well! It is thinner so it leaks out of bad seal and really cleans the trash out of the engine. I just dropped my oil pan in the cub last week to replace the gasket. The lower end had not a trace of sludge or residue or anything. When I got it the oil hadn’t been changed in 15 years. That was 5 years ago.

I run Rotella 15 40 in everything with an engine, no problems in 20ish years from oil. If we can somehow link it to alternators and starters though

Thank you all for your help. I have changed the oil for the first time. The cub is much happier. I also fixed a leak and tighten a fitting.
And then cut some grass.
