What radiator

Due to health and lack of ambition, I have just been skimming the posts rather than doing any serious reading, and have gotten behind on everything. I have a 49 cub that the radiator started leaking while it had been setting in the shop around 2 months with it's only use being to run the carry all up and down while I was using it for a work bench. It is leaking in the rear of the left corner, but I have not yet torn it down far enough to get the shroud and side supports off so I can see if it is repairable. Is Clancy still the best choice if I have to replace itr, and where is a good place to buy one?

I shipped a Clancy to Paul in Australia and he couldn't use it because the core was not perpendicular to the base and it would have tilted into the fan if installed. I don't know if that was a single glitch or if Clancy is having QC problems. At least it would be easily returnable over here if you got one the same way.

On the 1950 cub I have been working on, it came with a Northern Radiator. As far as I can tell the hood sat on it correctly. The overflow is a plastic tube. I purchased a new metal tube from TM, but I will need to massage it a little to fit. The upper pipe must be slightly different as there is an interference with the tube when I tried to see how it fits.

From the condition of my radiator, I don't think it is that old. Plus it looks like they have changed the Part Number from CR9558 to 219558.

You will probably need to shorten the new metal tube from TM so the curve is closer to the radiator.

I just received a Clancy radiator today. I won’t be able to install it until April because the Cub I need it for is at my other place. Maybe I should have waited but prices keep going up. Just in looking at it, the bottom plate is flat copper and has a slight bend here and there but it will bend and confirm to the casting easily when tightened down. Just eyeballing it, it looks good to me. I have installed a Clancy previously with no issues.

It seems to me that if you can get the upper hose on and secured and the side supports in place, the bottom plate will have enough flexibility when tightened down to conform to the casting if the radiator is kept vertical. I’m no expert, but it sure seems like it would have to be off by an awful lot to hit the fan. Plus, you have a pretty stiff, tight fitting hose between the upper radiator and engine that gonna restrict movement toward the fan. Unless as mentioned, the casting is distorted for some reason and it’s hard to imagine it being that far off.

I have a Clancy on my Cub I have here and there looks to be about 1” space between the fan blades and the radiator surface.

Anyway, I’d feel bad if I helped out a guy in Australia and then the part didn’t fit. I didn’t review any follow up on our Australian friend's project but based on the clearance I have it seems like the radiator would have to be visibly catty-wampus. Or his fan is bend out of shape.

I did check with JP and they couldn’t tell me where their new aftermarket radiator was manufactured. I’m sure it’s high quality but I just like to know where a $195 item is made. TM doesn’t have the Clancy in stock but is getting them back. Ron said the price is going up but he couldn’t tell me the price. So, I bought it from the place that had it and gave me the best price today. It was roughly $60 more than I paid 3 1/2 years ago.

I have used several Clancy radiators, except for the overflow tube they all fit the way they should, The A & I brand is also a Clancy
