What Paint Primer do you recommend?

I have started restoring my '51 cub and I have started stripping paint down to bare metal and have been priming with an aerosol etching primer. I am a little concerned that this may lead to failures down the road as this might not be a quality primer. What primers do you all recommend? I will probably be using an automotive paint for the finish.

Good question.
Becker make a good point

What the final coat going to be and work your way down to the metals.

I use van sickle recently, would recommend it foundation if this is a working and show . Something you want to real nice.

If you want something pebble beach concourse de elegance the PPG single stage Omni .

All depends what the finished goal is .

Me Il like the van sickle just because it’s going to get scratched .

I will probably be using an automotive paint for the finish.

Case IH dealers sell paint for their tractors, people have said on here that it lasts well.
There are spray cans, and quarts, I think. You would need to ask a dealer about the primer.
Below is a listing at TM Tractor Parts for a spray can of the red. You can see the color of the cap.
There is also yellow, white, and silver.

Always use a self etching primer. Spray can ones are fine for small jobs but if your painting large parts like hoods or fenders I would recommend getting some 2 part self etching paint from NAPA or your local Auto Paint Store. This will require an air compressor, spray gun and above all a respirator…..can’t stress using lung protection.

Be sure to follow the directions. I messed up my '48 Cub, so bad I gave up -- removed the hood and took it to a paint shop. They did a fantastic job, sandblasting off all the old paint down to bare metal and repainting with new paint.

I used the CNH paint in the spray cans. It works very good if you follow the directions. I can't remember the detail, but I either waited too long or not long enough, for the final coat. When I sprayed the final coat, the top coat and the bottom coat dried at different rates and the whole hood had a "crackled" finish that was horrible.

I use PPG Shopline Epoxy primer. It is a two part primer. If you want to go top of the line use Deltron, but not sure it's necessary. The other stuff will work, but eventually moisture will get behind it. Epoxy won't have that issue. I put IH2150 as the top coat, but I might use DelFleet 2k next for a top coat. I do use a 2k high build primer on the sheet metal to help get stuff flat before top coating. For my 200 it took about a Gallon of primer and for the top coat. High build it just depends.
