What is Shuttle Shift

Shuttle shift what exactly is Shuttle Shift? The full story I'm looking at a small Ford diesel with a manual trans and a steering colum mounted shuttle shift but I don't really know what the shuttle shift is :? Does the shuttle shift allow the operator to simply pull the shift lever and change tractor directions without using the clutch? I'm thinking shuttle shift would be great for snow plowing with the manual trans in 1 or 2nd gear or maybe I'm not understanding it correctly ?
 
My Ford 4630 has shuttle shift but I have to use the clutch. It’s off to the left side, it is handy and I like it. Some shuttle shifts you don’t have to use the clutch, just depends on what model it is.
 
that setup on a ford is a manual transmission, has regular gears but has a torque converter instead of a clutch, so just put it in gear and go, it has a lever for forward or reverse
 
Certain tractors only allow shuttle shift between 1st and reverse, for moving loads with a loader; very handy if you need to go fore and aft quickly and a lot. Better read up on the operator manual to be sure you know how it works!. I would think it could be very handy in certain snow shoveling situations, like when you had short runs.
 
My Case 580 Ck backhoe has shuttle shift allows quick shift from forward to reverse , however you have to clutch it. It has a manual dual range tranny.

Hmmm I need to get more info on the tractor so far all I know is that its a 1990 Ford with a very small 3 cylinder diesel , it has a manual tranny , looks very conventional minus the shuttle shift part :?
 
My BIL's Ford Backhoe has shuttle shift that does NOT require clutching, but I believe it to be all hydrostatic drive (possibly mechanical to front wheels). Very handy when tearing down a pile of dirt. I do think we normally let off the foot throttle so it's not shifted at high engine speed.
 
Well the tractor in question is a Ford 1310, made in Japan by Shibaura its a nice piece of equipment in great condition always inside and given the chance I'm going to own it the current owner has his mini farm up for sale and the farm buyer (when one shows up) gets first refusal on the tractor and then I'm next in line ..... fingers crossed I want this one .

The owner says it has always needed to start with the glow plugs even in the warm summer months , seems odd to me :? . also seems a bit odd to make a tractor with a 1,000 hour gauge that start over after 1,000 hours , currently it reads 600 hours but owner says trust me it's got 1,600 hours on it.
 
A few years back, I had a Yanmar with a manual trans. and shuttle shift. The shift lever was mounted on the steering column. All the way down was reverse, then neutral, 1, 2, 3, 4. It was easily shifted between speeds without clutching but shifting between forward and reverse was too severe, it made you want to clutch while shifting. In combination with the 4 speed manual trans., it had a great selection of forward speeds. It was a great little tractor but I bought it to re-sell and that's what I did.
