Volt meter on my CC RZT 50

I checked both the Owners and Parts manuals and found no reference to anything that might identify as a regulator device, only the alternator stator ring with the diodes that I posted earlier. Might be that the engine is an older model and works differently. B&S ID codes says its mfg date is 04/05/18.

I looked at the parts catalog on the Cub Cadet site. The diagram with the charging system did not show a regulator. But the parts list for that diagram listed a regulator at the bottom of the list with no reference number. The part number is BS-794360. Searching the web for it shows a square part with what appears to be an aluminum housing and 2 wires attached. One is red and the other yellow. It appears to be held on by a single screw through the middle. Going to PartsTree, the diagrams for your engine show that regulator as one of the configurations that engine could have. Searching that number, there seem to be plenty available with prices from about $60 to twice that. The same search will show you plenty of pictures of it. Look around on your motor for a square piece of aluminum.

Thanks for the info Jim. I'll see what I can find that fits the description. I've figured out that if I fully charge the battery after each 3 hrs of use. A bit of a hassle since I don't have AC power at the storage location but I'll work it out until I can correct the problem. Stan

How about a solar trickle charger? You can get them for around $20.

Tks Don, I've considered that but haven't done any serious investigating yet. That might be an option and certainly a useful tool to have around with multiple batteries. Stan

I didn't see it in the alternator/electrical diagram you posted earlier in this thread. Just check, all over, on the exterior of the engine to see if that is the one. Sometimes they are in a location that is hard to find.

Thanks. After looking up the info from the part number that Jim posted to see what it looks like, I think its on the right side of the block just below the shroud opposite side from the starter. At least the color of the wires match up but it does not fit the physical description but rather is rectangle in shape with a fastener on each end. I'm going to remove it and see if I can find a part number for comparison. Most of what I have seen listed has several other part numbers displayed that says the one Jim listed replaces these others. I'm thinking that because of its age maybe some of the newer ones might just be a revision/upgrade from the original. Stan

Yes. As I was looking at various listings several part substitutions showed up. At least one of the numbers displayed a rectangle with provision for a screw at reach end.

Info Update...... Got a few minutes to remove and get a pic of the regulator which shows the B&S part number. Probably the OEM installation. Now to source one and get it on hand to see if it makes any difference. And I was wrong about what it looks like, it's as Jim described. Don't know how I missed it that bad, probably in a hurry. Thanks. Stan

UPDATE: Finally got the replacement regulator and installed it today. In the interm, I've been getting a charge on the battery after use but before storing it so I'll be monitoring it now to see what if any change takes place with the new regulator. The volt meter has been really handy to be able to monitor the charge state of the battery. Somehow I've lost the single bolt that fastens it onto the block so I've got to find one. Problem is, I have no idea what the ID is but I suspect that it's a small metric thread fastener, size, length and thread count unknown. Looks to be about 1/4" diameter and about 2 inches or less in length. Since I don't have a parts list for this, here's hoping that someone who does can look it up and give me the ID info so I can purchase one. TKS Stan

You should be able to buy something similar at Lowes or Ace Hardware for a few bucks.
Yup, part of the problem is (as indicated) I'm not sure what I need to get. When I'm done, I usually have a handful of different sizes when I try to guess what's there. Gotta bite the bullet and get a small metric tap & die set for situations like this to take the guesswork out of the problem. Stan

I decided to do a search using the method described by Jim Becker in a post above and found this: Unfortunately no description or specs, but it looks about right. Looking at the prices listed, it must be gold or at least gold plated! Gotta figure out some other way. Stan

Sometimes when I back away from a problem I can look at it differently. I thought that there had to be a fastener on this engine that was similar in size and thread count and this morning I decided to try one of the 4 wing bolts that holds the air filter cover in place. To my delight, it's an exact match so the problem just got a lot more simple as I will just take it with me to the hardware store and match it for the correct length! That's a better solution for me that ordering the OEM part for about $10!! Thanks for listening! Stan
