Underslung exhaust repair

I have one with a couple of 1/2" holes. Is the easiest fix to cover with a piece of Al pop can, then wrap with exhaust pipe repair tape?
 
I did that to the muffler on my old car Bob , and it lasted for years.
From memory I stuck the thin aluminium on with silastic
Talk about dodgy
 
I had a hole in my 4 wheeler exhaust. The muffler was split looks like it backfired from them running the choke on cause the carb was dirty. Looks like it split at the rusty seam, the weak point. I cut out some sheet metal I had for a patch and welded it on. Pipe may not have enough left for this to work with your pipe. I might be tempted to use a patch of metal and JB weld or either maybe JB weld and a piece of fiberglass matt to span the gap. Then sand the mess somewhat smooth. Quick paint or once it's dirty it wouldn't be as noticable as muffler wrap.
