Transmission Clutch Shaft Wiggle

Hey guys,
I just began renewing a 48 Cub. Pulled the engine to renew the clutch and noticed that the shaft has a great deal of play in it. I would assume this means a new front transmission bearing and seal? This is a fun machine to work on!

Wouldn't be surprised if the transmission rear bearing, was worn, too. Ed

Once it is free of the engine, it will have quite a bit of movement due ot the length and how close together the tranny bearings are by comparison to total length.

When I pulled the transmission and drive shaft from the torque tube, and then pulled the pto assembly, I rotated the gears and watched the shaft turn. There is a slight wobble in the shaft at the far end. Is this acceptable due to the lenght of the shaft? Should there any wobble at all?

Thanks John for the response. I am getting close to 1" of play with the engine removed. I don't think the tranny seal was leaking and it wasn't making a noise (but I am extremely hard of hearing, so I may not have heard it). Is an inch or so of play normal?

An inch of side play or so is normal. If the front seal is not leaking - I would leave things alone.
