Too Close For Comfort

Earlier this summer I came home to find that a 9 inch diameter locust tree had fallen from the county park and smashed my chain link fence. Today, I finally got around to cleaning up the mess. It fell across several Cubs, but so far I see no damage. The top of the tree came to rest on a six foot security fence about 40 feet away. That helped keep the tree from falling on top of the Cubs. Tomorrow the chain saw comes out and then the Cubs will get a bath. More firewood for next year's Barnyard Bash.

Yesterday I called the park district to see if it was okay for me to trim back any trees overhang my property. We have about 800 feet of park property along our chain linked border. Many tree branches pos a potential danger to the fence. Two large trees are growing into the fence and bending it. The district said someone would be out to talk to me some time this week. Surprisingly, within twenty minutes I got a call from the park manager. She said she was in the area and could stop by in a few minutes. When she got here she looked at the downed tree and crushed fence as well as many of the trees I have mentioned. She said she would send the park arborist to determine what trees need attention. She said the park would take care of any trimming that would be needed and rectify the trees growing into the fence at no cost to me. Some of the trees I have been trimming back every year are invasive and she said the park would completely remove them. Wow, It never hurts to make a call. This week the power company is set to remove a large tree out by the road that I had wanted gone for several years. They said it was a danger to the power lines and they would have it cut level with the ground, all brush hauled away and stack the would where the tree was for me to use. Lot of less work for me.
