The old girl (Cub, not wife!) has seemed to be running hot so I thought a good flush wouldn't be a bad idea. Picked up a bottle of cooling system flush, since I knew the fluid was already low I dumped it in without draining the system, topped it off and ran it a half hour or so twice. I couldn't believe the crap that come out when I drained it, it hasn't been that long since I flushed the radiator and block with a garden hose when I split the Cub and went through it. Trying to remember when that was I looked up the auction receipt- 20 years in August!!!. No wonder its so cruddy. Now for a dumb question- does a -non-pressurized system have a thermostat? A quick parts lookup didn't find one, but I can;t member. Thanks.

Thanks Jim, I didn't think so but I'll have to plead CRS on this one. But that explains why I couldn't find a replacement!

I drain my Cub cooling system every fall and replace with 50/50 Prestone concentrate and water. No crud ever comes out - just the yellow/green Prestone color. I drain every year for the corrosion protection qualities of the Prestone. You can keep the antifreeze in for years for freeze protection, but corrosion protection deteriotes with time with engines running over 200 Deg F.

From now on I'm going to try to remember to drain mine. As I said, I can't believe it's been 20 years. It doesn't seem more than 5 or so.

Just out of habit, l flush, drain, and replace my 50/50 coolant about every 3 yrs. On my mowing '48 that gets the most use, l'll add about a pint every month. I know it seeks it's own level, but when it's hot out l want to make sure l'm not over heating.
