Techron Fuel System cleaner for Cub?

I recently used some Techron Fuel System Cleaner in one of my cars that had a cylinder misfire issue. Not only did it get rid of the misfire, but the car runs absolutely amazing now with excellent throttle response. The cleaner is supposed to not only clean injectors, but also the tops of your pistons, valves, etc.

That got me thinking about my old Cub. I doubt any fuel system cleaner has been run through that old tractor ever. Would it hurt to run some of that through the tractor or no? It contains that PEA additive that is supposed to work really well at cleaning off carbon deposits and other stuff. I would imagine it would help clean the carburetor up a bit as well. I think it's a lot stronger than something like Seafoam, etc.

Just curious if anyone else has tried that stuff before in your Cub or if maybe I should avoid it for whatever reason.

I have used it in my JD Gator, which chronically smokes a bit. I’ve also used Seafoam. Neither seems to have much effect. I suspect that the ingredients in both are very similar.
That Techron stuff works awesome for cleaning fuel injectors, but obviously we don't have those on the Cubs. I've used Seafoam before to clean up the fuel tank and carb on an old riding mower. I got it to run much smoother after running Seafoam through it.

Maybe I'll give it a try one day just to see if it has any effect on my tractor.
 
That would be a waste of money. The fuel injector cleaner is for very small jets in an injector. The main discharge nozzle in a Cub carburetor is relatively large in comparison to an injector discharge. You would be better off with Sea Foam or Marvel Mystery Oil.

Techron is one of very few injector cleaners that actually works. At the research center, we ran a whole lot of different fuel blends, some really disgusting, to purposely foul injectors. We then used different cleaners to bring them back to life. Techron was a clear winner. I don’t see it doing much for a Cub, though.
 
IF it actually removes carbon from pistons---then oil is gonna start going past the rings???? --- meaning total motor rebuild??? ---i wouldnt chance it but its your cub so go for it if it makes you feel better.

Yeah I couldn't believe how well it worked in my Challenger. That car runs awesome now!

I guess everything has its application though and a 75+ year old tractor may not be one of them for Techron haha! Just figured I'd ask. Sounds like Seafoam or MMO is a better choice.
 
If you believe you’ve got carbon buildup around your rings, Polyethylamine is the best cleaner there is. All of the modern fuel cleaners and fuel itself use it because of the propensity for direct injected engines to get carbon buildup on valves and rings.

If the Cub engine smokes, with blue smoke, it could have stuck piston rings, a common thing on Cubs.
They have said on here to use Seafoam in the engine oil, it can help loosen stuck piston rings.
One of the experts on here said to use it for 2 oil change periods.
The 1950 Cub owner's manual says to change the oil every 120 hours of use.
They have said on here Seafoam can help increase compression also, if the compression is low because of stuck rings.
If the rings are wornout, the Seafoam won't do much.
I remember reading on here people saying they had good results using it. :)

Yeah I should try dumping some Seafoam in the tank before I cut grass next time. Maybe a little in the engine oil too.

The tractor smokes some on start up but then it clears up pretty good once warmed up. It will still smoke a little bit though under full throttle when warmed up but not too much. I've never had to add oil in between oil changes so it can't be too bad. Probably a stuck ring like you mentioned.

One cylinder has a spark plug that gets more oily than the others. That's probably the problem cylinder. The engine runs awesome, very quiet, good power, it has always smoked a little on initial start up though.

Add it to the fuel and oil per the instructions on the can.
