Switch question

I'm doing some rewiring on my '51 H - the old wiring was in pretty poor shape, insulation peeling off etc. I removed the dash control box and refreshed it and it's wiring. The four way switch works fine, thank goodness, but I was looking through the internet for information on it and basically could not find a picture of the one I have. Incidentally, it's the same style of switch that I had on a '51 Cub I had. The fuse is separate from the switch. Anyway, here's a picture of the switch off of my H. Any information on it would be appreciated.

:)

Based on the resistor, I assume it has a dim and bright function? I also have an H but have not yet torn into the wiring in detail. Is there also a position that would turn on the rear work light?

Hi Rick - yes, it has a dim and bright function as you mentioned. It also has a rear light. What I was wondering was if anyone else has a switch like I pictured. Everything I can find on the internet shows a switch with a built in fuse. Here's a picture (courtesy of a post from Bigdog » Sun Mar 20, 2011) of what I've seen on the web. Mine is much different and I was just wondering why.

Jim,

If you turn the two pictures to where the resistor is in the same position, you will see that the actual light terminal contacts look roughly the same. However, yours no longer has the charging resistor to switch between low and high charge like the early cubs did when IH used a cutout instead of a voltage regulator. Your H obviously came with a voltage regulator, or has one now. And you are missing the fuse as well. Later IH models moved the fuse to somewhere in the dash, as I suppose getting to it on the back of the switch was a pain. The actual hookups for the various lights all look the same.

Thanks, Rick. Yep, you're right. And I also found another post here on the Forum that does show the switch I have (courtesy of phildidit » Wed Dec 02, 2009). All is clear now. Thanks!

Jim

Okay - I got the switch layout figured out - thanks to all for their help! Now I'm rewiring the rest of my H. I came across this diagram which is great, but I can't find the key for the numbers on the diagram. Can anyone help me out?

OH - I know it says 1950 M, but I'm PRETTY sure it's the same for a 1951 H...

:help:

That looks like a diagram from a Parts Catalog. The numbers are references to the part number listings that follow the diagram. Your H Parts Catalog should have a similar drawing with numbers that match the part listing in that catalog.

Thanks, Jim. You're right - after I read your post I searched the internet and found it on Messick's. Now to dig into the wiring for real. I appreciate the tip!
