Super A Transmission, What have I gotten myself into?

Lots of blocking and jack stands on the front axle.
Axle wedges under the steering box helps too.
I thought I took more pics while the tranny was off, will have to look for those.

EZ, I have never torn down a tractor rear before. Looking for advice.
When I take off the final drives, do they just slide out?
I am taking my time. I have the fenders, seat and platform off now.
Moving on to removing finals.
When I removed the left fender, the bolt that goes into the PTO housing. Must have been broken and stripped prior to me or I did it.
Don't know how important that bolt is in supporting the rear rockshaft.
The front bolt on the platform brace rounded off on me, so I left it together and took it off as one piece.
Looks like I am creating additional work with stripped and rounded off bolts.

Hi Dave,
Glad to hear that you are 'going in'.
From what I can recall, after you remove the bolts holding the finals to the tranny there are some short alignment pins you will encounter. Just pry it apart. The axle will slide right out. That is on the left side. On the right, your axle is longer and goes through the tube that the back of the platform connects to. There should be some pins on this as well to line it up on the tranny side. The finals are quite heavy, so it might be best to use a cherry picker if you have one. If you take the plate off the back of the tranny you can see where the spline shafts go in. I can give you more later.

Post a few pics of your progress as that will help our memory. Do you have a service manual? It will also explain the process to some degree. It has been my experience that the manuals assume you some knowledge of mechanical work and may omit some basic procedures.

Here are a few pages from the manual I used.
Make a mark on the countershaft and bevel pinion to it's position on the main drive bevel to make sure it stays in the same location when you re-assemble.
Also Dale's post is tremendous is showing how to do it.
Awesome Dale.

Thanks EZ, I may get out today to remove right wheel and PTO.

Good stuff.
I always found that I spent more time thinking about how daunting these tasks will be.
Until the wrench was actually in my hand and I started turning it, then it became easy, and I would have to declare that I was overthinking. Seems to be a condition I have.
Again, my advice is to take lots of pictures, catalog all your parts in zip lock bags etc.
Good luck.

Well today the tractor won. Had it jacked up, cherry picker on the right wheel. removed all 6 bolts. The darn wheel would not budge. sprayed area with blaster. Now the tractor is sitting there laughing at me. Tuesday will try again.

Age factor has probably got it locked to the axle. Try a BIG hammer (place a board on the tire/rim so you don't bend/break anything) and hit it HARD!!!

That's what I was going to suggest. Just be careful...when that puppy breaks loose, make sure your cherry picker has a good hold on it!

Ok, so wheel will still not budge, all bolts out hit 2x4 with sledge hammer. Nothing. I was able to get the wheel off the hub. I was thinking to tear down the final drive to get the shaft to pull out of final. Any thoughts.

Hi Dave,
Now that the wheel is off the hub, you should only have to unbolt where the shaft is connected to the tranny. Should slide right out.
Can you post a photo of where you are at

So made some progress today. got right rear final drive off with the hub and weight attached.

Started working on the left side. got the wheel off the hub, started loosening the bolts to remove the final drive. Got the top 4 loose but the first bottom one rounded off. so I quit for today.

Wow, amazing how those hubs are frozen on there. Extra weight to deal with but you got the one side off. Progress for sure.
