I own the video. The sound is horrible but if a still picture is worth a thousand words, then a video is worth 1 million. Like you, this Cub has been in the family since new. I've never rebuilt an engine before (other than a lawn mower in high school shop many years ago) so I was definitely nervous. I'm a mechanical engineer and good with tools but I guess a bit obsessive/compulsive. I read the previously mentioned manuals several times, watched the video a few times, and also found a guy about 5 miles from my house who rebuilds tractor engines and hired him as a consultant (and specialty tool rental since I don't have a valve spring compressor or hones, etc). I also found a local engine machinist who let me watch (and even help) and take pictures as he worked on the engine. I plan to post some pictures of that soon. I haven't worked on it in a week or so but I guess what I've found is that the Cub engine is super simple to work on. I have spent quite a bit of money including the machine work, new bearings, rings, seals, etc (all from TM Tractor of course!) and my time so that is definitely a factor. I would highly recommend you just go for it.
