Step-by-Step Guide to a Rebuild??

I own the video. The sound is horrible but if a still picture is worth a thousand words, then a video is worth 1 million. Like you, this Cub has been in the family since new. I've never rebuilt an engine before (other than a lawn mower in high school shop many years ago) so I was definitely nervous. I'm a mechanical engineer and good with tools but I guess a bit obsessive/compulsive. I read the previously mentioned manuals several times, watched the video a few times, and also found a guy about 5 miles from my house who rebuilds tractor engines and hired him as a consultant (and specialty tool rental since I don't have a valve spring compressor or hones, etc). I also found a local engine machinist who let me watch (and even help) and take pictures as he worked on the engine. I plan to post some pictures of that soon. I haven't worked on it in a week or so but I guess what I've found is that the Cub engine is super simple to work on. I have spent quite a bit of money including the machine work, new bearings, rings, seals, etc (all from TM Tractor of course!) and my time so that is definitely a factor. I would highly recommend you just go for it.

I have the vhs version from many years ago, poor sound and even worse video but still it may be worth getting if you are not sure of the process. It is only $20. The folks in the video may be members of the board and may comment if there is a better updated version in the works.
