Steering very sloppy

Working on a Super A and the steering is very floppy. If you turn one way and take up all the slack you can do a full revolution of the steering wheel back the other way before the wheels turn back. Not sure I want to dig in unless I can actually make a difference as it seems to require the front axle removal. So just wondering if its worth the effort. Would love some pointers from others that have done this and if you can tighten things up.

Thanks

Jon

Just a quick bit of information since it's late...this is the exploded diagram of the SA Steering assembly.

It's been many years since I've had one apart, and a previous owner had actually welded the steering worm wheel (#19) to the steering worm wheel shaft (#20). There is a key way there that is supposed to keep the two parts held tightly together. My guess is the keyway either sheared or was worn enough to add a lot of slop to the steering. There were probably other issues that added to this as well. But I don't know the exact reason.

Anyway, it helps to at least know how the assembly works. Other folks will probably come along later with better information, but this gives you something to look at. Good luck!

Thanks Dale that is really helpful. I’m going to have to get into it as there is so much slop but knowing ahead of time what to expect is great. Thanks

I had a SA that had a lot of play in the steering and replacing the upper bearing which was completely worn out helped a lot. I did not have to remove the axle as I recall. JMHO Stan

I can think of a half dozen different places in the Super A steering that can get loose and cause free play at the steering wheel. Several key parts changed so there are early and late versions of the parts. They wear in different ways that show different symptoms. You find the source of the free play by looking at the tractor.

Turn the steering wheel back and forth through the free play while inspecting the whole system. (Having a helper turn the wheel makes it easier.) Look for:
- movement of the steering shaft in and out of the steering gear housing (it shouldn't).
- movement of the steering worm wheel shaft, up and down and sideways (hard to see) (it shouldn't).
- movement of the steering gear arm, up and down and sideways (it should move sideways, not up and down).
- movement of the tie rods sideways (they should).
- movement of the steering knuckle arms sideways (they should).
Somewhere between the steering wheel and the tires will be one or more places where something should move but doesn't or something shouldn't move but does. Tell us where that happens and we can help identify what it takes to fix it.

I have pictures in the Photo Host showing some removal tips and pictures of the shaft and atm on a table. Getting everything apart was not a huge job. The hardest part was getting the steering arm to come off the tapered shaft. I found one of the 2 keys, the upper one was broke in half. I got it fixed but must be broke again. I will be ordering a new sector gear, shaft, seals and keys soon. The bearings are new from the latest fix/fail. Should have gotten those parts before reassembling it.
