Stay 6 or go 12??

I suggest that you investigate attending a Cubfest when you are able to get out. There's an annual get together in Bogalusa LA usually in the early spring that would be a great time to get together with some forum members and other cub interested folks. So, I have a ‘53 that I’m gonna restore after my bone marrow transplant that is still 6 volt. I’m also getting another just like it that was originally owned by the brother of my ’53. It is also still 6 volt. Neither are running and haven’t for many years.
In the opinions of yall that know way more than me… would you leave them 6 or upgrade to 12?

Phil All of my tractors are still 6 volt and there is nothing wrong with a 6 volt system (I have a 53 Cub 2nd owner since 1988). With 12 volt you have twice the electrical push of 6 volt at half of the amperage requirement. With 12 volt you can drop 3 volts through increased electrical resistance and still have cranking power for your Cub. In a 6 volt system if you drop 1 volt through unwanted electrical resistance you will have problems. As stated by others the cables required for 6 volt need to be able to carry twice the amperage, many auto parts stores can make you ones that will carry the required amperage. Search my threads for how to perform voltage drop testing and test your system. Another way to test for unwanted resistance is with temperature gun (they are inexpensive Harbor Freight?). Resistance equals heat and its what makes my toast in the morning. In absence of a temp gun the old way is to lick your thumb and apply it to the connections to "feel" the heat or lack of. For Cubs I eliminate one ground connection and run a flat strap ground cable (about a 12 inch cable the flat strap is the one to use) around the front of the battery and down to the battery box mounting bolt thus eliminating one connection on the ground side. Also in that battery group size that fits the Cub you can get a 600 plus CCA battery now you may have to order one as many places only carry the smaller 500 CCA battery. Our local auto parts store is third generation owned and they cater to the antique car crowd. The goods news is that your 53 Cub has a voltage regulator to control the charging system which is far superior to what came before it. Hope this helps Cubguy's Dad
