State Of The Art Crankshaft Manufacturing

I know a guy that custom manufactures crankshafts for racing motorcycles. Pretty much the same process except he starts with a billet rather than a casting. He does wear eye protection though.

His lathes are more automated. He sets them up to turn a journal and walks away. An alarm sounds when it's time for him to set up for a new journal. His tools also seem to be sharper.
 
I only watch part of it, crude in anybody’s book. I watch a lot of videos on machining and this was not what I was expecting to see.
 
Youtube popped this up on my "recommended" menu. Fascinating to watch but so crude. That being said, it's impressive that they can produce these in this shop and environment. They have a similar episode making steel wheels.
 
I worked for a company that built special machines. One time we were booked solid with work and our company didn't want to turn away work when we received an order for additional machines. Since we were booked up, they contracted a company in India to build the overflow machines. We got out our work sooner than expected and the Indian company was falling behind so management decided to pull the work in India back in house for us guys to build. The frame of these machines were made from steel plate about 3" thick, 6' wide and 10' tall. Normally adding tapped holes, clearance holes and other features to the plates is done on a boring mill. When we received the frame side plates from India, we found scribe lines where the machining features were laid out by hand and the holes were crooked so they were undoubtedly drilled by hand!! :shock: We screwed some 3/4"-10 bolts into some tapped holes and the bolt were no where near a right angle from the plates!! As you can guess, it took quite a bit of time to repair all of the "work" done by the "Indian Machinists". :roll:
