I have a 56 loboy 12V that turns over nicely but wont start. Probably electrical but I dont have time or skill to trouble shoot. Gave her New wires, plugs, rebuilt starter, new alternator and cleaned carb and gas screen. Carb gets fuel. Need someone in New Jersey who can visit me in Summit, or I can drop off.
Will pay good money for help. Im stuck and the grass is getting high.

Clean and set the points gap with the points open on the lobe of the distributor shaft at .020 and see if the points arc (fire) when the engine is turning with the ignition switch in the ON (run) position. If the points are firing as described, reassemble the distributor and check the spark from the center output (tower) of the coil to ground. Spark should be crisp blue and jump about a 1/4 inch gap to ground. If no spark consider replacing the coil. Since you stated 12V and alternator you are probably using a 12V coil. Battery should be Neg to ground since converted to 12V and the coil should be connected + to ignition and - to points terminal on the side of the distributor. Since you said new plug wires check the connections are correct for firing order. One, three, four, two. Too far from AL for me to visit. :giggle: JMHO Stan

Sorry I didnt mention i replaced the coil with one that has a resistor. Could it be a fried light switch or start pull switch or not connected right? Seems to get power from coil to starter only. I can renovate houses like crazy but not good at trouble shooting electric. Bought a tester with small jaw clamp and pointed touch rod. How do you use it to test a break? Does the jaw clamp go to ground or end to end?
 
If your coil is 12v with resistor it should be OK. The tester you described is probably a single wire with a clip on the end of the wire and a light inside the handle. You can use it to check current flow from point to point. Basic one has a light to show current present and some have different color lights to show polarity. To use it connect the clip to a ground like the neg battery post, touch the pointed end rod on the handle to a known power source like the pos battery post and the light in the handle should turn on proving that there is current present and flowing pos to neg by the light being on. Follow this same example to test current flow from the known source (battery) to different points in the harness/system to see if there is current present. Example: tester grounded to the battery neg and select the test point like the + terminal on the coil. Prove current to the coil by the light in the tester on and off as you turn the ignition switch on and off. If this works post back and I'll describe how to test the points firing. I sent you a DM. Are you getting spark to the plugs? You can pull a plug out and rest it on the head and turn it over to verify spark to each cylinder.
