spiders

The spider population seems to be a lot higher than normal and getting inside houses a lot worse this summer. this week I have noticed a lot more balloon (kite) spiders than normal. They climb close to the top of a tree and spin long threads that they release into the breeze, and keep them extending till the air currents are enough to lift them off the branch and take them for a ride. I was mowing the yard (hopefully for the last time for this summer) and about 1 1/2 hour before sunset I started noticing the sun reflecting off the strands. There were thousands and thousands of the silvery looking threads shining in the sun, as they lay on top of the uncut grass, streaming from fences and tree limbs. I had already run through several that were still floating, including having to swat some spiders off me. Enough of the strands were hanging from the ZTR that there were clumps of grass hanging all over it, in addition to the strands and globs of strands. Sure be glad when that is over with.

John, I've not noticed any of those spiders in western Mo... have you been having those clown sightings in your area? (balloon's ;) )

Ain't it funny when you see someone go ninja when they run into a spider web? :-) Except when it happens to me!

Supposedly one sighted in woods behind elementary school a couple weeks ago, but I suspect that one was a hoax. I have quit wearing my clown face in parades for a while. :D

Article in local news paper last week. Sheriff stated that there were no confirmed clown sightings in the county.

May be the clown scare is the number of folks observed in the county asking for votes in the up coming election.

John: I've known you for 17 or 18 years. You don't scare anybody with or without the clown costume.

Mowed some more today, nice warm day in the 70s, and stiffer breeze than yesterday. No sign of more spiders or their silk strings, but lots of lady bugs. Man do they scratch when they go down your shirt. I do not know if spider season is over, or if the wind was too strong for them to kite, and had destroyed the previosu filaments, or maybe the number of lady bugs crashing into the threads had destroyed them.

I know I'm a few months behind on this but I saw "spiders" and hating spiders it caught my eye.

Anyway, some 13 years back having moved into our new home we discovered there were spiders all over the house. Nasty fast little buggers that looked like the racluse a little. Having pets we didn't want to use poison so I was constantly vacuuming but they were still there.
Among out pets was a terrarium with tree frogs and a house gecko. One time while cleaning a water bowl the gecko shot out, up the wall over the ceiling into the kitchen and behind the fridge. Ok, he's gone. But not quite. Over the next few weeks we noticed spider sitings dropped off and any bug that flew in from the porch light wouldn't last as the gecko was hard at work. We'd only see it at night and never saw any other evidence that he was still around.
We had him running around taking care of pest control for about 3 years until we found that the cat got him one day.
Too bad as he did one heck of a job.
Mike
