snap on valve seat grinder

Hello. I recently bought a snap on valve seat grinder. works great and did a wonderful job. however i cannot seem to find any stones that fit it. the thread is 5/8-18. does anyone know where to get them? i tried goodsons and they dont have them or adapters for them either.

A model number may be useful if you have it handy or better yet, a few photos. I've done a little bit of research on my end and this may be of use. It is somewhat long winded, bear with me.

I have a Blue Point (Snap-On) seat grinding set with Blue Point drivers (very similar to a Black and Decker I used to have).

I have one Black & Decker driver that is of a different thread and size than my other drivers (they are 11/16"-16 thread). I have not measured it, but none of the stones and adapters I have will fit it. It has a single stone on it about an inch in diameter. The part number (50638) comes back as a 15° stone. As tst suggests, this is a K.O. Lee rebrand, but in the book I found online, it shows it as a 9/16"-16, not a 5/8"-16 as your post states. Goodson does have the adapter for 9/16"-16. I can't find anything anywhere about a 5/8"-16 driver thread. Might be cheaper to find different drivers.

I was looking on eBay and found a listing for a K.O. Lee seat grinder set. Very interesting looking set. I have a few pieces that would have been for this set.

Vintage Machinery Black & Decker Automotive Catalog This catalog is somewhat informative.

I've attached two photos of what I have. The stone has a Black & Decker part number on it. It also has the rounded six-point drive ball socket on the other end.

I hope this is somewhat useful.

thanks for the reply. the model is a VG-11. it is actually a blue point if that matters. the drivers it uses are a 5/8 ball type. I don't have any pics at the moment. If I read your reply right you have other brands of drivers. Do any of these fit on the blue point motor? Goodson doesnt carry an adapter that converts this to the 5/8-18 thread that I need with these drivers. I hope I didn't buy something I can't get stones for.

I don't think you bought something you can't use, you just need to replace some of the parts to make it usable. The important part is that there needs to be near zero runout (play) between the pilots and the stone holders, otherwise your newly ground valve seats will not be perpendicular to the valve stem and may cause problems if you buy used stone holders that are worn out. Some can be rebuilt with new parts.

What is the outside dimension of your pilots? If they are 3/8" you may just want to purchase a stone holders that you can find stones/adapters for at this point and forget about the stone holders that you have. I believe that you may have the VG-10-2D stone holder, but not sure of that.

I have 3 stone holders (the 4th one is an un-named variant of basically the same) that I use. They are a Blue-Point VG-15X and they are used with a .375" top pilot with a 5/8" drive ball, just like your power unit. They take the 11/16"–16 stones. I have some adapters to adapt from the 11/16–16 to the 13/26–13 that Kwik-Way stones require. There are a couple of eBay listings for these drivers (stone holders) or Goodson sells new ones of this variant, but they are not cheap by any means.

***EDIT*** I think I may have narrowed down what you have a little further. I found some old Snap-On catalogs online and your drive motor is listed in a catalog from 1948. The set that the drive motor belongs to is a VG-120-B according to the catalog.

I hope this helps,
