Haven't had any indication of mice in the house for some time. Do have mouse poison set out in house year around.

Been raining most of the day and on/off for the past couple of days. Do live in town, perhaps a bit less than 100 feet from woods. Do occasionaly see snakes.

It's 2 hours after my first post. Snake is currently off the chain and on the adjacent window sill.

Do have moles. One digging tunnels around the foundation. Haven't caught him/her yet.

Late May/early June seems to be the time when rat snakes (aka, black snakes) lay their eggs. I caught a female trying to go in the entry door of the barn this time last year. Within 30 minutes, my neighbor and I were visiting and he spied a larger (male) black snake around the side of the barn coming to the front.

Needless to say, I keep the overhead and entry doors closed during May and June.
 
They are also looking for occupied bird nests this time of year. Maybe got confused and thought the chain would take it to a nearby nest.
 
They like moles too. That's a good thing. I'm not a fan of snakes in general, however I do realize they to provide a balance in nature. Nature being the operative word here not in or around my house. I do try to tolerate the black snakes to a certain degree. But there are limits!

Yes and my limits and their limits seem to overlap at times. That's when it's bad news for the snake...
 
i give non - poisonous snakes a wide berth . Great mice/rat eradicators !! We have tried to teach our kids/grandkids the ones to stay away from. Each situation is unique . For the most part , even poisonous snakes are given safe passage . Cottonmouths are given special attention , very unpredictable ! First hand experience with them will leave a "memory" hard to forget . In general , I'm rethinking my opinion of them . coppersmythe.......................................
 
So I went trout fishing and caught a nice 15" rainbow, put it on a stringer, staked the stringer and went back to trying to catch another. I came back and there was this 4ft black snake muckled onto the belly of the trout with jaws way wide open. I was PO'ed and tried poking it with the rod and it would not let go. Finally picked up the stringer and shook it...then he dropped off.

I had a snake go after a turtle that bit my line. I took the tip of the rod and tossed it far out in the water, it came back. I knocked it out, it came back, it veered up at me to bite me I took a rock and it was no longer a problem. My son never seen me lose it. Little kids fish this spot.
 
I know most snakes are harmless but I still don’t like them and I have zero use for poisonous ones. A copperhead laying on the welcome mat on the front porch bit my wife two years ago. My current dog and two previous ones suffered from copperhead bites. It starts getting expensive paying vet and hospital bills. I’ll leave non poisonous ones alone as long as they practice social distancing and don’t startle me. Poisonous ones have to do better than that and stay far enough away that I don’t even see them otherwise they meet their demise from a shovel or hoe or bush axe or 2x4 or the pistol that I almost always have in my pocket.
