Sand Blasting !

I've got alot of rusted parts to paint and to pay for sandblasting them here is excessive. I was thinking of getting a machine ( sandblasting ) of my own , any sugestions out there from experienced operators on what to buy. Something no too big, but efficient.

Not exactly sure what you mean by a lot of parts, but if you mean a lot of parts for something like a cub tractor, then I think you would be quite satisfied with a pressurized type sandblasting pot. You can get them from someone like Harbor Freight for about $125-150. Get one that holds about 100 pounds of sand. Sandblasting takes a lot of air. I don't think you will be happy with anything smaller than about a 60 gallon tank. I started out with a 30 gallon tank, and having the added capacity makes blasting much quicker and more fun too.

I used to do all my sandblasting outside with one of those 100 pounders. Had all that sand used once and the mess to clean up. I also had to do it outside in the cold and the line would freeze up constantly, even with a dryer. Then there is the health issue. So this winter the FIL purchased something much nicer(See attached photos). It is one of his wiser investments even at $1200.
It originally was only a 4 ft x 2ft x 2ft box. This had it limitations, so we've added a 6ft extension out the left and a 2ft extension ou the right, now we can handle a lot of things. It also has a filtration system, remember you can't put a price on your health! Think it through. If you don't need something that big don't get it, but like a trailer or garage it can never be too big!

countershaft you on or near 219? I was at my daughters in Punxy last week. I had planned to try to get back for Dubois plow days but it did not work out.

I'm just off # 219 on route # 248, 4 miles north of Ridgway. Punksy is 50 miles south of me .I was at the "plow Days" in Luthersburg on Saturday There was alot of plowing with Cub Cadets ( about 40 acres) some Cubs and older tractors , but I was a little disappointed . Our better show is in Center Hall, Pa. ( Nittany Antique Machinery )in the fall. 3days big time ! They feature "Massey Harris" this year. Each year has a different manufacture, parts available, flea markets and all kinds of tractor contests and displays .

Bill --- I'm looking for an economical way to remove rust from tractor metal parts for painting . The box type blasters have their size limitations and the portable ones have disadvatages too, but I'm tired of putting out $ 200 bucks every time I need something sand blasted. That's probably the most frustrating part of restoring , getting it ready to paint . There's alot of posts with new paint jobs on the forum, what do you guys do ???

I would recommend visiting the person who makes Head~stones for your local cemetary. The headstone man in my town charges $50 per hour for blasting and he knows his blasting business. It cost me $65.00 for an excellent job of getting 2-rear rims and the hood/tank done. I have a good pressure sand blaster that I dont ever use anymore since I discovered the de-rusto tank.

Bill, Sorry I didn't take any pictures. I don't have a digital camera, only a 35mm and I don't know how to post them on the board. I've tried , but what a task !

The bubbling witches cauldron seems an easier alternative to the sand blasting option, poor ole Klev's got glass beads in his fan bearing, that's just the sort of thing I can do without,
Read the show on the cauldron and will I think ba having a go before too much longer.
What however is TSP in eurolang. Caustic???
Your help will be appreciated
Pat

Pat,

TSP is tri-sodium-phosphate, a good cleaner that we are having trouble getting here because it WORKS! Actually, anything that ionizes to make the water conductive will work... some things better than others because of their cleaning properties. Common lye (NaOH) would be good but requires more caution. My tank right now is running with common washing soda.

Unless you have alot more time than money, I would just go with having your blasting hired out. By the time you get all the equipment, then deal with the mess and the time you'll be ahead to just have it done. It seems like it costs alot but you take it there-then you pick it ready to paint. Now if your not in a hurry or retired with time on your hands then the above does not apply.

a grinder with a relatively "soft" wheel will do the trick. try a polishing wheel or something of the sort. worked really well, just had to be patient so i didnt chunk any metal.

If you were not so far away, you could send me the parts and Ii'd blast 'em for you. I have 2 blasters and 2 boxes and use grit as high as 320 (use to etch glass), but you are a long way and ups makes tons of money shipping old parts back and forth. Evey try using your wire wheels and die-grinder with a wire wheel, that works also.
Good luck
